The withdrawal deadline is coming to a near and I am having a really hard time making this decision. I want to drop one of my classes because I'm pretty sure I'll end up with a B-.. maybe even a C+. NOT SURE YET. It is not a nursing class but if I stick with the B-, it will make a difference to my GPA. When I start my clinicals, I know I won't have a good GPA anymore but I still want to try my best to graduate with at least a 3.5! I'm leaning more towards a W because that class is boring and I have that class early in the morning. This will also be my FIRST W....
W's look like you gave up. I was told that when looking for a job, if you have a W, to them it looks like you don't react well under pressure, and you didn't try. Don't get a W, take the B-, it looks way better, and by the time you graduate, the b- will not make a difference in the long run. My theory, get an A in another class to balance out the b-. Trust me, better in the long run. Now if it were a C- then maybe drop out, but even then, the C- can be compensated for, it is one course out of your approximate 40 courses in school over 4 years.
I'm not going to drop out anymore. I did my calculations and the highest I can get is an A but that means I have to get a 100% on my next 2 exams which is impossible lol. I'm going to aim for the A but I'll be satisfied with a B. Realistically, I think I can pull off a B :). You're right, withdrawing is giving up and I'd hate to think I'm a quitter. I'll be satisfied with a B but I really hope I don't get a B- ...... at my school a B- is a 2.7 on the GPA scale.
I have never heard of a B- on a transcript, at my university a B is a B weather is is an 80 or an 89.4. I would say the W is just fine, I have a few on my transcript, and never once was I asked to explain them. It is up to you, but your GPA is valuable. I think W's are fine, just not in excess. If you already have a few on your transcript then be weary.

Just FYI, plenty of schools use plus minus grading. My current ABSN program does. My undergrad degree did, except for A+, which was still only 4.0, which I had a problem with.
My $.02 is that the OP was making a huge deal over very little. A B- won't make much difference on your GPA unless you are on the very edge anyway. in that case, there sure was something else that could have been improved to make up for it. I graduated Cum Laude with a 3.62 and I had a C- on my transcript, got a gread job coming out of school and made plenty of money. My employer never asked to see my transcript, so they never saw that C-. They did like the Cum Laude on my resume, however.
On the flip side, if there are no negative repercussions from withdrawing and you didn't need to take the class and didn't really enjoy it, I see no problem with withdrawing either. Someone looking at a transcrips is going to have no idea if you dropped a class a month in because it wasn't what you thought it would be or dropped it at the 11th hour because you were crashing and burning or anything in between.
Lastly, I don't know too many who would grill you about a W on your transcript, but the honest answer that OP withdrew because they were receiving a B- and wanted to maintain a higher GPA and the course wasn't necessary I don't think would be very damaging
BTW, I realize the OP has already reached a decision. I just wanted to post this for anyone who might read this thread in the future in similar situation.
I am so proud of you!!!! Good luck, and let us know how you do in the end!You can do it:anpom::anpom::anpom::anpom:
I seriously suck at life... I ended up with a B. I didn't try my hardest ...... I just can't. I'm young and I can't help but have fun too but now I'm kinda down because I did "ok" in all of my classes!!!!!!! If I keep up with this, I seriously don't know how I'm going to make it through nursing school. I'm really really really really really really disappointed in myself . But this is a WAKE UP CALL FOR ME. I need to STAY FOCUSED AND STOP PROCRASTINATING when next semester starts.
B- is not an F.A or B- is basically the same thing as far as GPA is concerned.
I had a 3.66 GPA, after taking a 6 point class and getting and A my GPA is now 3.68. That means I can get all As and the highest my GPA will be is 3.7.
Yea GPA's go up hard and come down easy.
But I agree, getting a B is totally acceptable for this class (that you didn't like.) This B can be explained (if it even has to be) by lack of interest in the coursework, meaning you still stuck it out and finished the class although you didn't like it.
A "W" is simply an "I QUIT!" to anyone that glances at it.
