working in before getting into nursing school? I'm turning 24 years old this month and I just applied to all the nursing programs in several local community colleges and state university. I've been doing so many odd jobs/temp jobs for the past 3 years in clerical and light industrial type jobs. Right now, I am unemployed and I hope I find a job just to get by. The only thing I have right now is volunteer work at the local hospital... which would be my only healthcare experience.

Specializes in Ortho, Neuro, Detox, Tele.

I worked as a direct care aide at a DD group home, a water collector door-to-door for a water purification company, a activity director (3.5 years), and a CNA...all ok jobs, but I like this one way better most days.

Specializes in SNU/SNF/MedSurg, SPCU Ortho/Neuro/Spine.

Worked with marketing and corporate travel in brazil,

in 2004 started working in construction, brick, tile, drywall, decorative concrete, texture, painting... 2007

I was a teacher for 7 years. Now I work in a book store to pay tuition. Ironically, I worked as a CNA to pay tuition for my Bachelor's degree.

Specializes in med/surg, telemetry, IV therapy, mgmt.

before i went to nursing school when i was also 24 years old, i was working as a bookkeeper. i was very good at math and originally started out studying accounting thinking i would become an accountant. i knew after my second year of accounting classes that i was not going to like that profession. i disliked working in an office so much. i hated the backbiting and gossip. nursing was something i had often thought about but never seriously thought about as a career. at the time the opportunity to go to nursing school in california just opened up to me and off i went.

what about caregiving in assisted living?

Specializes in Tele, ICU, GI.

Once I decided I wanted to be a nurse I went out an got a CNA license to make sure I could do the job and enjoy being a nurse. I learned so much from the nurses which helped me in school. I also was able to ask them questions to help me understand my studies. Now I'm working on my BSN.
