Where will I have the least amount of contact with men?

Published

My passion is in women's health and I'm continuously looking for open positions, literally all over the country. I would go anywhere.

I am wondering if there is an area within the field where I will have contact with the least amount of men (labor and delivery, postpartum, NICU). Or if I should stop applying to hospital positions and only look for gynecology offices, women's health clinics, etc.

I had just been assuming that nightflower is a female but under the profile it is stating "he". So, if this is the case, I think you can go ahead and rule out working with retired nuns.

I had thought the same thing. If male is correct, this puts a whole other spin on odd and impractical.

I agree. There's no way I can try to defend OP on this. I just can't fathom an appropriate reason why a male nurse would ONLY want contact with female patients. I understand why a male nurse would only want to work with males, or female nurses with females (especially for cultural reasons). This changes everything..

If the OP returns I think some clarification is needed???

OP is a male? I'm on the iphone app and I can't seem to click on anything in the profile..

Me neither...although the OP has a LinkedIn page, apparently.

It may be that she is very conservative in her religion. I grew up in a very orthodox religious community where it is STILL the norm that dad is not in the delivery room and another woman (mom or sister usually sometimes a dula ) is there. Find a hospital or clinic that caters to very religious populations possibly immigrants.

I think I should have read more before I posted

I definitely didn't realize OP was male. Well... I don't know what to think. Why would a male nurse not want male patients?

It's much more difficult to get into an area with primarily female patients as a male nurse.

OP hasn't been back anyway... Oh well.

OP simply stated that she doesn't want male patients.

No, actually the OP said that the ideal job would be not being around males, period.

Lots of you posters falls over backwards thinking of reasons for this situation to exist for a female, that she may have been abused, or in a controlling relationship.

Suddenly the possibity that the OP may identify as male confuses everyone? Males can be abused or in controlling relationships. If your mind is blown that OP could be male then your being a sexist.

Frankly we don't know what gender the op identifys as for sure, not that they need to identify in the gender binary. Or even be willing to identify a reason for their prefference.

The consensus seems to be that it's not realistic in America for a nurse to expect to only take care of one gender. OP will have to adapt or accept some very limited job opportunities. I agree with this. Also I agree that OP should do some therapy or other counseling to root out or get coping mechanisms for working with either gender.

OP there are all girl summer camps that would be a temporary gig that would satisfy your request.

I think you are right that it makes me sexist that the revelation of the OP being male (when I assumed female) changes my perception of the situation.

I did ASSume the OP was female. Probably because I have never heard of a male nurse preferring female patients only. I have known female nurses who prefer not to care for male patients. Also male nurses who don't want to care for female patients when it requires anything dealing with sex organs (gyn surgeries/diagnosis, foley insertion, ect). Sometimes it's cultural, sometimes it's a different personal issue. I haven't known a male nurse who only wants female patients.

You are right, it could be the OP is a male who is uncomfortable around men for various reasons..

I agree, however, it raises other signals when there is a male that prefers female pts...that gives me pause as to why-IF the OP is a male. If that makes me sexist, then consider that sometimes posters have experienced issues as well with males, and will give pause-if that makes me sexist, so be it.

so the OP being a male that wants only to work with female patents raises signals and gives you pause? Because there are "issues with males". So are you implying that the OP may have an alterior motive? As if all "he" wants to do is see naked ladies? Even though actually sticking to "his" preference is career suicide, because it's so limiting.

I'm a man who works in pediatrics. Does that make me a child molestor? Do I give you pause? Maybe I'm reading to much I between the lines here.
