Where to start help please

Published

my wife wants to go to school to become a rn. however, i'm in the military and we move frequently which makes it practically impossible for her to have 4 years guaranteed at the same location. unfortunately, for us to be able to afford her school means that i more or less have to stay in since i am still 2+ years away from finishing my degree (its taken me 5 years to get my associates lol). i am certain that i could be stabilized for at least 2 years (which from my understanding is the required length for most nursing schools) but in the mean time wish to find an option for her to start her schooling. we have attempted to search the net for some type of prenursing program that can be completed online... with no luck. could someone please provide the basics of what she would need to get into a nursing program? what is the best thing to do in our situation? the only thing we have come up with amongst ourselves is for her to get an associates in general studies and just take a bunch of natural science/chemistry courses. my main concern though is that she doesn't loose to many credits transferring to a nursing school. if someone could point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated. if someone could give me a school that provides such a course i will consider you my hero :) lol

I agree that she should just take as many general education classes as possible in the next two years. Many ADN programs require the same general foundation of courses. It's safe to stick with CHM, BIO, Micro, A&P I & II, PSY I & II, ENG 111 & 112. Give or take a few classes. At my college you don't have to take CHM or Bio if you took them in high school.

It is really good that you are going to stay where you are for the next two years. And then as soon as you find out your next duty station she can start planning for the programs around that area.

It isn't really necessary, unless she wishes to do so, to take classes online. Of course I preferred it for the english and psychology classes but many schools won't accept science courses without a lab portion. And I definately don't recommend an online nursing program. I may sound ignorant and rude but they really sound like a hoax, to me personally. I really don't even understand how they work though. How can you be a nurse if you haven't had any on the job training?

Mi Vida Loca - yup, the sheep brain comes in the lab kit. My kids can't wait until I carve into it, lol. AP2 we get a frog I hear, I did one of those in HS, but it will be interesting anyway.

All exams are open book, but not easy at all. For my AP an exam is only worth 20 points but I have assignments and journals due for each unit as well, and both of those are worth the same as the exam. The units run around 70-85 points without a lab and 150 points with. My labs are worth 75 points and in total we have 1050 points...so you can see there is a lot of work involved in it, way more than just exams.

I was worried that some schools wouldn't take it, but when I got my transcripts to see what they showed up like, it doesn't even show as online. My transcripts come from a 'parent' school and it just has the class and credits, nothing about being online. This is the way it is for all the CO state community colleges, I love it.

I homeschool my kids and this way I'm able to do my school when time allows, I couldn't ask for a better system. My daughter will even be doing her pre-reqs online starting in the fall (paid for by her HS). She'll be able to do her school and still helping her younger brother with his school when he needs help while I start NS full time in Jan.

What part of CO are you in? I am in Fort Collins :)

Thank you all for the help. I think we've gotten an idea of what to do :)

Mi Vida Loca - currently I'm in Pueblo (hubby is building the power plant here), but we will be heading home to Brighton this summer ... I can't wait! Its actually green at home! Which NS school are you looking at getting into?

I took A&P II and Micro online too. The tests are also timed and there is NO WAY you can look up all those answers in the time alloted and like Sand Dollar says, they are hard questions! I took my A&PI in a classroom and thought that the class in the brick and morter building was comparable to online. The only thing I didn't like the online classes for was that you couldn't ask the instructor if you got stuck (it takes 24 hours for your instructor to get back to you). I did LOVE the freedom of the online class though as I could wake up in the morning and do my experiments in my jammies (with the apron of course)! Oh, and I work 60 hours a week so it helped with that too. :)
