Where are all you SC nurses?

You never here much from nurses in SC. Are there not that many on this board or have I just missed you all?

It would be nice to hear about experiences here in SC.

Perhaps we should introduce ourselves.

I am a student in Charleston, just moved here with my family to attend nursing school. We plan on staying here after I graduate instead of moving back to Myrtle Beach.

I am also in Charelston, just graduated from MUSC. I'm working at Roper, started right before my last semester as a nurse extern. I thought the NE experience was great. You only have to work 4 hours on a weekend per month to keep your job and they are really flexible working around school schedules. I will be working as an RN on the floor where I externed.

Good luck to you!!

What about parking for staff at Roper? Is that a problem? Do you know about working conditions anywhere else, such as St Francis, the VA, TMC, SMC, MUSC?

:) Congratulations on your graduation!! Roper will let you work as an NE for 4 hours on a weekend? Who do I need to speak to? I would like to do something, but I only want a few hours a week, especially with Med-Surg this Fall. What floor do you work on @ Roper? Thanks for the advice! Tina

I worke on 6E Cardiac stepdown and 4E CHF. My manager was great about working around my class and clinical schedules.

You need to speak to the nurse recruiter, Deborah Wilson. You can apply online. just visit the website, http://carealliance.com/. She will set up interviews for you with every floor you are interested in, you meet with each of them and rank your preferences, that way they can make a good match for the NM and you. Even if you don't end up working on that floor as an RN, it is great experience.

Parking is not a problem, Roper provids free parking for employees.Roper St. Francis

I too must agree :rotfl:

However, you have to make a noise I mean you have to call the State Representatives Offices and get any info you can becuz,,, they'er only gonna tell ya bout the stuff they want you to know about and if ya make enuff :Melody: they will put you in touch with someone else who will put you in touch with someone else who will ect, ect, ect until you find a voice who will Give you nuff stuff to have ya out there making

NOISE LIKE ME!! :balloons:

Then we have to watch and see the legislator's Try to do sumthang??

Maybe the reason no nurses from SC post is related to the fact that SC does very little to support her nurses. Unlike lots of other states, there are NO incentives for nurses, NO state sponsered scholarships - basically, SC govt says that they "acknowledge that there is a nursing shortage crisis, but that many other issues in SC are more important and they can't put any $$ into supporting nursing students, etc". I ended up in this state purely by "accident". If I could aford to move, I would - Personally, my research shows that almost ANY other state would be a better choice than here! Unfortunatley, I'm stuck! If anyone knows something that I don't that is "positive" - please reply - I would LOVE to be wrong about SC since I will probably die here! :o

SC born and raised here. I graduated from USC and have worked as an RN here for over 30 years. Y'know SC is my home. I choose to live here and I like it.

What exactly do you want recruiters to say? Trying to get a straight answer from a recruiter is more certain than from a legislator...

I see Aiken, Batesburg, Charleston and Myrtle Beach here. Who did I leave out. Add my way beyond the boondocks and turn left to the group.

Tell me what you find distasteful about my state. What would be recommended to change it or make it better?

At the time that I wrote the original post, I had been searching for financial aid. What I found when I searched was MANY, MANY scholarships and grants for nurses, IN OTHER STATES, but NOT SC. Many states have loan forgiveness for nurses who agree to work in their state - Florida has special mortgages with lower interest for nurses, just like for teachers.

Second, my husband was military, so I have lived any five different states - the cost of living in SC is higher than ANY place else when you add in taxes on vehicles, insurance rates and cost for property here - including Florida, which has NO state income tax - interesting since the pay here is lower than any place that I have lived.

It seems to me that the only chance of getting any help from the state is if you graduated high school here and go right on to college - that Hope Scholarship or Promise, whatever it's called. I have lived here 12 years and paid taxes all that time but because I didn't graduate high school here, I'm not eligible for ANYTHING.

I guess what I'm saying is, it was very frustrating to search for help and discover that I couldn't have picked a worse state to have moved to and had I picked just about ANY other state, there would have been help. Just seems like the powers that be are counting on nurses who grew up here, to want to stay here, because they aren't doing ANYTHING to recruit people from other states nor to keep them here.

Sorry if I hurt anyone's feeling who grew up here, but these are the FACTS. :o

I just had to laugh when I read this! If you had kept going straight - you would have run over me! :chuckle

I live half way between Pelion and Wagener - equidistance from Columbia, Lexington, Organgeburg, Aiken. Going to MTC right now. Could have gone to USC Cola or Aiken but I like Tech - just wish their waiting list was a bit shorter.

I'm sorry to hear that you've been through some challenges with funding. Many of us have been there. Have you applied for a Federal Grant? Have you applied for scholarships with the hospitals? Remember - where there's a will - there's a way.

Glad to finally be a part of the group! I applied to Palmetto Health for a part-time weekend job as a Nurse Tech/Unit Secretary. My husband was offered a teaching job and had to take a pay cut, so we could really use the extra income (we have four children). Pray that they call me for an interview!

Good luck on your move! Rock Hill is a nice enough town, but I wouldn't recommend working at Piedmont Medical Center. If you want hospital employment, it would be worth your while to drive inot Charlotte.

Hi Katrina! I like it here, though I am a bit homesick for Buffalo food and culture. I am still a student so I don't have much input on working environments. I've heard mixed things about PMC - depends on the dept you work in. But we do like RH and call it our home now :) Welcome to the area (soon!). Do you have any children?

Hi y'all,

Greenville here..... Well, Pelzer actually... But try to find anyone who knows where it is. Here 11 years now by way of NJ. Have been working in LTC and MD offices pretty much since I got here. Went to school in NJ so have no clue about nursing schools here. Have one friend who did USCs ADN program, and one who did Gville Tech. Me... I cant stand the thought of classrooms, and have seriously considered the Excelisor program. Has anyone here done it, or thinking about doing it? Anyway, Married, one fur kid named Marty...
