I have worked in labor and delivery for 9 of the 15yrs I have been a nurse and have never seen our census so low. I'm used to seeing 500-600 deliveries a month and now we are down significantly. I keep hearing the economy is to blame, I just can't believe there are that many people who plan their pregnancies. Is any other state feeling the decline like Texas?

actually, when the economy is low you end up seeing a rise in births due to the fact that ppl do not have $ for entertainment, and stay home making babies... But you never know, maybe people have learned their lesson...(one would hope!! lol j/k)

How sad is it that that made me laugh?
On a less silly note, I know the economy has my family-planning-plans on hold. I will not "let myself" get pregnant until I'm 100% done with school and have been in a job I'm decently happy at for a year. Which probably means I'll never have children, haha. We want children, but my husband and I can barely make do for us and our cat, and I have a lot of school ahead of me yet. :)

Yup I'm with her, the next baby won't be till after I'm the bread winner since daddy has become the stay-at-home with just enough time left on unemployment for me to become an LPN

Where I am, they're back in Mexico. The crackdown on illegal immigration really affected census at all AZ hospitals.

I'm pregnant. LOL, sorry but it's here in California.
Oddly enough, despite how horrible the economy is, I know a LOT of pregnant women and most were unplanned and can't think of a worse time to get pregnant.
I'd send some of them your way if I could.
Our census is a little bit lower than it has been, but we were slammed the last two months with a completely full ICU. Can't speak for other departments though.

Haha, it's funny because I have 10 pregnant friends and I am also pregnant. I feel like there's something in the water here and everyone's pregnant. But we're all due July-October.
I, too, work in L&D and we had a lull from Jan-March but we're heading back to booming now!

I miss the smilie that says "Yeah, that!"
I'm in the exact same boat. I'm currently living with my in-laws and we're getting by with just enough to make all our payments, pay an extremely low rent, and take care of our cat. But I want babies oh so badly. It's just not the time yet--I need to make sure I can provide before I try to have a baby. Though I know a LOT of people who are pregnant right now. Just makes me want one even more.

it's the cold winter, people snuggle up at night in december/january...and couple months later in late summer/early fall....babies come! :) congrats on your pregnancy!
Snuggling? Is THAT what happened? :dncgbby: Thanks so much!
