Where are LPN's working besides LTC/Home Health?

Nurses LPN/LVN

Hello,

I am wondering what kind of opportunities will be out there fresh out of school. I really, really, really dont want to do LTC. Its way to depressing for me...I was a volunteer for LTC for years and don't think I could work in LTC as a career.

Thanks!

Hi, I work as a primary care nurse on a locked psych ward.W e deal with the family Doc's, Psychiatrists. We have total responsibility like doing the social work aspect right down to discharging pt and taking Dr.'s orders and processing them.We have the full respect of the DR'S and we never hear ''Get me the R.N.''

I recently graduated in June. I was working in Neuromuscular Sciences as a tech before--now I'm working fast-track in a trauma 1 Emergency department. I really like it so far. We have 2 major hospitals here and only one hires LPN's--the other one uses LPN's as techs. As someone already said it just depends on the area in which you live.

I work for a plastic surgeon......I really like this job :wink2:

You can work just about anywhere. I am a LPN and I worked in a teaching hospital, but I have seen job listing for docs office, and different places.

When I graduated from LVN school in Texas I went to work in a dialysis center. I have worked in LTC and didn't like it much. I have never worked in a hospital and never will, I had enough of that in nursing school clinicals. My true calling is Home Health. I have been doing that for about 13 years. I am now a CWS (certified wound specialist) and have new job offers every week. I am turning down work on a regular basis.

How did you become a CWS? I've thought about it for a while but hasn't really looked into yet... any tips?

Thanks!

CMLPM,

Lots of experience and pass a test. Unlike some of the "wound care specialist" certifications out there, the certification from American Academy of Wound Management is the most recognized and respected. It takes 5 years of documentented wound care experience and passing a comprehensive test. All the information you need is on the AAWM web site @ http://www.aawm.org.

I work in hospice and I love it. :)

hello,

i am wondering what kind of opportunities will be out there fresh out of school. i really, really, really dont want to do ltc. its way to depressing for me...i was a volunteer for ltc for years and don't think i could work in ltc as a career.

thanks!

i am going to start the rpn/lpn program in september and i was thinking the same thing. i am just hoping i can get a job in a hospital after graduating.

i too, find that working in an ltc facility would be very depressing. i had my grandmother live with our family for 3 years. she had parkinsons and passed 2 years ago last feburary. she lived with it for 10 years and i saw how she just went downhill. i don't think i could deal with the emotional part of it. i know... working as a nurse i will see alot of this but i would like to try to stay out of the ltc, retirement , etc part of it. maybe work in the surgical, delivery, whatever.

i live in ontario and i am just wondering if anyone else in the kitchener, cambridge area had any luck finding a job in a hospital after graduating?

I'm going to begin working on a med/surg floor at a local hospital.

I'm a new grad LPN and I work in the Neuroscience unit of a Magnet Hospital. Of course, different hospitals around the country have different policies, but in the hospital I work at LPNs can work almost anywhere!

That's great to hear. In canada we always hear about the magnet hospitals and it always sounds as though they do not have LPNs working in them at all. Do you work in a team environment? Do you have your own autonomous patient assignment or do you work under the direction of the RN?

I work in a hospital on the Med sure floor. I run my own patient assignment and function in the same way, with obvious practice differences, as an RN.. I couldnt work in LTC except as a fill in with an agency . I like the daily challenge that the hospital offers and the variety of procedures that I get to see. I commend all the people working in LTC but for myself it would not be a dynamic enough of a day to day environment that would allow me to grow as a professional.......

Specializes in Geriatric Psych, Physicians office, OB,.

I am currently working in a Geriatric/Psychiatric unit, in which there is never a boring, quiet day! I am the Med Nurse, which means I basically just give the meds and assist with whatever's needed throughout the day. The patients are in group activities, meetings, visiting with family, etc. and I really enjoy the job. I was previously employed in LTC, where I loved the residents but the job itself was a nightmare. Staffing is much better in psych.
