Where are all the jobs????

These CEO's need to stop interpreting nursing silence for subservance. Nursing would like nothing better than to push these scum bags into a locked room and throw away the key. It's not intimidation. It's called holding their tongue so they don't end up in jail. They misinterpret silence for agreement or approval. These CEO's and their fiscal playmates need to realized that when one of them or theirs is a patient, the nurse runs around for them because they have been forced/ordered to do so by their manager. This I know from personal experience. My thoughts in that situation were- go pay for a private duty, I'm a public duty nurse with 6 other patients sicker than you and you are not special. It's not because they give all their patients that over attention. And it's not because they want to.

Is relocating an option at all?

There seems to be some regional opportunities.

If you hunt around all of these boards I think there has been some job availability around Chicago, the Dakotas, I've heard about some in South Texas, not sure about others. The market is very dismal now, I have written at least 6 entries on different threads--because my biggest pet peeve is when the lay community still speaks of the "nursing shortage"....it is like nails on a blackboard to me.

It truely isn't like when I graduated in 1993...all you needed then was your license in your left hand and a pulse in your right hand...and you had a job.

I live in South East Florida and it's tight here as well. If it's any consolation, it's rough for the experienced nurses as well as the new grads.

My real advice is: If you can relocate--do..go to where the jobs are.

If not, I would not go for any advanced degree yet, you do not need to take on any more debt and I honestly do not think having a Bsn will get you hired any faster than an ADN...sorry, I don't.

You need to spend all of your time and energy finding a job, then you can go on for the degree, if you want to pursue it.

You know, it's a numbers game just keep sending out applications and resumes. Use a 60 mile radius(or whatever) and flood the area, hospitals, LTC, Surgicenters, Outpatient GI labs, Urgentcare Centers, Jails, think outside the box ..(most Doctors offices here now only hire MA's no more nurses ...so sad) but try dr offices.

sooner or later, you will get a job..you will..

All of you bring up very valid and interesting points. With the job market saturating with graduate nurses, that are unable to find jobs for the longest time, the situation will only go further south, which is "exactly" (and I emphasize-exactly, with a capital E) where the hospital administrators want the situation to be. Apply the same economics principles to this situation - and what you get is abundant supply, low demand - which will make the prices (or salaries) go down. When there is a solid competition for each job opening, those graduate nurses, that have no other choice BUT to take a lower paying job in order to feed their families or gain experience will flock to the door.

Sad reality is, I can't get hired even after stating that I am willing to work for the minimum wage as a licensed RN on my applications.

But here is where the profession is headed. Like it or not, all kidding and empathy aside, a decline in salaries is right around the corner. It will be pitiful watching one graduate nurse undercut and sell their own colleague / coursemate in the name of self preservation, while the big hospitals wave the wand of experience.

To "hkrntobe" I am in Rhode Island. I too also went back to school late in life, I am 45.

Thank you all for your responses, although still discouraging. It's nice to get honest information.
I work as a private home care aid, so I don't have hospital experience. (except clinicals) I do want to continue on and get my BSN but i want to work in the field this time, so at least I get my foot in the door!

I have applied to New Grad jobs... there just aren't that many. It's so fustrating.
I never see any doctor's offices, or schools or anyone else advertising for jobs. Where would I find this?
All the hospitals are all "online" applications. AAAAAAAAAHHHHHH never get an answer!

I guess time to apply to LTC which is what I enjoy anyway, but I wanted to start out in the hospital to get alot of assessment skills and experience with a wide variety of areas. ???

Have your resume looked over, change the wording to include a lot of action verbs, it might be something as simple as your resume needing tweaking to get you noticed. Initially you just want to get that call back to at least get an interview or pre-screening interviews. Look for interview tips. I was amazed at some of the stuff I learned and had never even thought about. It makes a difference. Dress up really professional and go and hand deliver your resumes to the Unit Managers, tell them you wanted to put a face to the name and bring your resume in personally. Best of luck to you.

no one seems to advertise anymore. The only sites i can find online is the hospitals and homecare.

Any ideas

I feel your pain.... I guess all the JOBS went to those that were well prepared and got their NCLEX stuff out of the way.... My school neglected to tell us that we could get our applications in before graduation... and i didn't do research so i'm definitely at fault.... I have to wait 6 weeks for my ATT and thats a minimum...
How am i coping? I have faith that the same GOD who saw me through the horror that was Nursing school will see me through to a job....

i love what you say about having faith that God will see you through this time as well. :) if you're willing to re-locate, central PA has lots of jobs and recruiters are practically begging new grads to apply. wishing you the best...

I have a close friend who is a Medical Assistant... from what I have seen, clinics and doctors offices have started hiring MA's instead of nurse's because they are cheaper.

Well, at least know you are not alone. I do firmly believe that if you keep at it consistently you will eventually be in the right place at the right time. Don't give up. You may have to take something that initially doesn't appeal to you but it will get you experience. I am 50 and at a crisis. I am going to school taking general ed courses while I decide what to do. Nursing may have tossed me aside at this point (age and back problems). But I have to do something or be on the streets. Never in my life did I think nurses would have such a difficult time. Do what you can to keep your skills and fundamentals up to date since they change so quickly. Be ready! Eventually it will come!
