When to send out resumes...

I graduate in June & I'm hoping to take the boards in July. I'd like to start working as soon as I pass boards. When would be a good time to start sending out resumes?

Personally, I didn't start sending out resumes until I already had a license in my possession. The vast majority of my acquaintances who sent resumes early were told by hiring managers that, "We can't do anything for you without a license." If you already have licensure when seeking jobs, it will be one less reason for hiring managers to turn you away.

My former workplace occasionally hired GPNs (graduate practical nurses). These people had completed LPN programs, but were waiting to take NCLEX. Since there are restrictions on what GPNs can do, and since they are working under the licensure of the other floor nurses, many facilities opt not to hire them.

Of course, you could send the resumes early to get your name out there. Exposure can be a positive thing when used in moderation. Good luck to you!

FYI, you never work under the licensure of another nurse, you work under the liability of the hospital or school.

In some states, RNs claim to be ultimately responsible for the actions of the LPNs/LVNs that they are supervising. Additionally, my former CI (clinical instructor) would always tell us that the students were working "under her license."

To be perfectly honest, I don't know how much truth lies within these statements. :)
