First off---I am a huge Patriots' fan...I watched every game, hollered myself hoorifice at the amazing Super Bowl on tv, and yes, even bought a limited edition Tom Brady Super Bowl MVP bobble head doll on the Home Shopping Network. I'm truly glad that they won and had a parade. BUT...where is OUR parade? Where is the parade for those of us who take care of other peoples' family members because they can't? When is the parade for the CNAs who get smacked every time they try to do care? When is the parade for the nurse who saves a life or holds the hand of a scared resident in the middle of the night? When is the parade for the management team who argue with corporate to increase wages or who stay and work a 14 hour day because they can't leave when their staff is short?

As a society in general, we value being good looking, young and strong. You're rewarded for being any of those things- an athlete, a singer, an actor, etc. Why do we ask celebrities their opinion on things like politics? Do we really think they're smarter than we are just because they're famous? Who knows. We don't want to acknowledge the hard work done by many people that make the world a better place to be. I'm sure that no one reading this forum went into nursing with aspirations of being rich and famous, especially those in long-term care, providing care to the old and infirm. It's something that needs to be done and there are people that will always do it. No fanfare, no parades, no big paychecks. But for the most part, I like to think that karma comes around in the end and it all pays off. Even if only when I look in the mirror and know that I made someone's life just a little better.
