It never hurts to ask. If that's the rate they pay for on-call but no one is signed up for that, then I don't see why they might not be willing to pay you that much. It probably depends on how desperate they are!!
Many years ago I worked 3-11 float. On occasion they were desperate for someone on nights and would ask me to work a double. I would do it if I could get the next evening off. Every time I asked, I got it.
You may find that the house supervisor who is under the gun right now to find someone is a lot more willing to give whatever it takes to get you to work than your NM under no particular pressure at that time.
At my PRN job We get $75 in cash and then $10 extra to pick up critical need shifts. It has to be deemed critical need though by the house supervisor. No one signs up for OT because of the fact if you wait it out - it gets deemed a critical need shift and you get the cash plus $10 to work it.
At my primary job though.....we only get 1 1/2 if we work over 40 hours - so if you pick up a shift extra a week, you only get 8 hours of OT at 1.5. However, we do have call and if we are on call we are paid $2.50/hr and if we are called in, we are paid 1 1/2 times for a min. of 4 hours.....however, it's 1.5 your base pay which stinks because you normally get shafted of all your shift and weekend diffs.

Wow! $75 cash! Is that $10 extra an hour? Yeah then I can see why no one would sign up ahead of time.
The one thing about being called in to fill in is that management knows we are understaffed and burned out. I am sure many of you are in the same boat. In my dept they call most every night I am off and call when I am on vacation. yet, they act like we should just want to come in out of the goodness of our hearts. One can only work extra shifts for so long with no incentive before just saying no! What is so wrong with giving a little extra for taking my day off? Sorry for the vent this thread just struck a nerve.

just got a call- someone called in on our med/surg unit so they need help tonight and tomorrow night (12 hr shift). is it wrong to say i'll do it if i get time and a half? i like to try the question just for the heck of it. once my manager replied, sorry there's no money in the budget for that. bullc**p, i thought. once the supervisor (desperate?) said sure without hesitation.
we have a sign up sheet if you want to be on-call- it's just for the weekend- the hardest time to find coverage. if you get called in it's time and a half but it can be either of our two m/s floors. but the problem is noone signs up. noone wants to work med-surg!!! anyway, i wasn't scheduled this weekend, kind of looking forward to being with the family but i think i'd work for time and a half. just wondering what is standard pay in other hospitals for those who fill-in.
