What's YOUR Dream Job?

I just heard a nurse ask another nurse "What kind of nurse would you be if you could be any nurse?"

So I am wondering...all you nursing students (don't even be realistic!!), if you could have any job, what would it be?? What is your dream??

For me, mine is to be a surgical ICU nurse, specialing in brain injuries. I also someday would love to do hospice (NOT peds, though!) or O.R. trauma. But that's just a little dream :headphone:

Specializes in Emergency Nursing.

I would love to try my hand at a level one trauma teaching hospital. Ive always wanted to start out in the ED and work my way up to truama. I also think flight nursing would be really nifty. I graduate in 2 weeks and one of our last clinical days is going to a flight ED rotation. We dont get to actually fly or anything but get to get inside the helicopter and talk to the nurse's. Im looking forward to that clinical day.

Well my dream job is paramedic. (I think I need to explain... In my country you need to study to RN (bachelor in medicine with major in nursing), work minimum a year on ED or ICU, then you're allowed to apply to paramedic course (Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Nursing – Prehospital Emergency Care), which will be 1,5yrs practise and theoretical studies). I'm about half way there at the moment :)

Specializes in Operating Room.

My dream would be CRNA; however, my heart currently lies in cardiac SICU, pun intended.

Disaster nursing, interfacing with local agencies, FEMA, the WHO, CDC, whoever, during natural disasters, bombings, or pandemics. Put me in! I'm ready to play!

Very interesting, where are you from? I'm a paramedic-going-bsn here in the US.

Did you mean me? I'm from Sweden.

Seems like a lot of people are interested in hospice and wound care from reading these boards. Can someone explain to me the appeal? Genuinely wondering, not snarking! I just don't know much about these areas.

I'm curious what you mean by working your way up to "trauma."

Based on my experience, being a "trauma" nurse could mean one of three things:

(1) Working in the ED in the trauma rooms where the trauma resuscitations take place,

(2) Working in our trauma unit which is where our more stable trauma patients go from the ED, or

(3) Working in the MICU/SICU which is where our more critical trauma patients go from the ED (we don't have a dedicated TICU).

OR nursing.

I like having one patient at a time. I like that my interaction is limited to a smaller group of people (I get socially exhausted after excessive interaction with people, like I currently experience as a PCT). I like the teamwork, the organization, the cleanliness and the technologies involved. I like the 8hr shifts that our hospital system uses for the OR. I can physically handle 12 hour days, but not mentally.

Specializes in Wound Care.

Hospice is not my thing but I love wound care. For me, I'm a very visual person so I need a visual gratification for what I do. To see a pt come in with a wound that makes you think "how the heck did you let that happen" and then visually seeing that wound heal over times really makes me feel like I have done something. I need that
