Nursing is a profession that often involves long lonely night shifts in eerie hospital wards. It's a perfect breeding ground for ghost stories. These stories often involve sightings of apparitions, strange noises, and unexplained events that are said to have taken place in hospitals, hospices, and other healthcare settings. Some of these stories are believed to be based on true events, while others are purely fictional. Regardless, they continue to captivate and intrigue both nurses and non-nurses alike - providing a spooky glimpse into the world of healthcare after dark.
I know you have seen and heard freaky things. Share your nursing ghost stories...
Has anyone here read "Hallucinations" by Oliver Sacks? (The doctor who wrote "Reawakenings?") Very interesting in that he shows that normal people have hallucinations of all of the senses, that hallucinations are not in any way definitive proof of mental disease or anything like that. And probably the most common hallucination is hearing one's name called. Freud heard that a lot-it isn't necessarily a ghost OR a sign that you're nuts!
Sorry-I meant to reply to Miss De RN-Nothing' for Nothin' was an old Billy Preston song that was a hit in the 1970s, so it was probably a practical joke by someone on your ward...an older person, maybe (like me.) Or maybe a ghost that likes classic rock.
Oooh... spooking Billy Preston loving ghosts, eh?
Actually, the song is "Nothing From Nothing":
"Nothing from nothing leaves nothing
Ya gotta have something
If ya wanna be with meeeeeeeeee!"

This one happened a while back:
Where I work we are required to tape report. One of the nurses was taping her report a bit late because she got a bit behind (imagine that ) and some staff came in a bit early. This meant she had to tape with some of the oncoming nurses and techs sitting there at the table with her.
The room was pretty quiet as everyone let her record. The nurse finished up, the rest of the staff arrived and they proceeded to play the tape. They listened to the nurse's report, that some of them had already heard as it was being recorded... and in the background was an anguished blood-curdling scream. It sent chills right through everybody and they just froze, looking at each other like
Now, we are a psych unit so it is certainly possible someone might scream or yell. However, the scream on the tape was pretty loud and no one had heard it while the nurse was taping. It had been quiet-- nothing unusual-- and if they had heard a scream like that, they would have certainly investigated to see where it came from... but no one heard it until they heard the tape play.
I was not actually there... darnit!
I was in the medroom fooling around at the Pyxis when a nurse came in with her eyes all round asking if anyone had screamed.
Ummm, noooooo...
Now, I was cracking up at how Scooby-scared this nurse was, but I was also rather jealous I had missed the fun because I LOVE creepy-weird stuff!
I haven't really seen anything but I'm convinced my hospital is haunted. I work in a psych hospital that has been around since the 40s. The hospital is upstairs and there is an elevator/stairs that lead into the dining hall, admissions, the c&a psychiatrists' offices and the ECT suite. The downstairs part used to he the hospital. On the first day of orientation in the nurse educators office, the closest bathroom is downstairs outside of ECT. It was pretty dark and quiet ewn there that day, they only do ECT 3x per week. I swore I felt someone watching me and the hairs on the hack of my neck were standing up. Later I asked another nurse who has been there a long time if she thought our place is haunted. She looked at me like I had just asked her if the sky is blue. I told her about my experience by the ECT suite and she said matter of factoy, "oh yeah, someone hung themselves down there when the units were rwn there". Creepy.

So the other day this security man at my facility had a ghost story to share...
He said they usually make rounds on all floors of the hospital every night just to make sure that locked places remain locked and that no suspicious activities are going on. On this unit that once was a stroke unit but was now locked up, whenever they made rounds they could hear a shuffling feet right behind them. This shuffle was always after them, no matter what security man made those rounds, and sometimes even open doors they had shut thereby doubling their work. He said though they couldn't see this 'entity' they could feel and hear him. Finally, they learned to ask him to stop and let them do their work. Then and only then would he stop but if they didn't ask him to stop, he would mischievously follow them around and turn lights on, open doors and all sorts of things to get and keep their attention.
I just wanted to say that I think it's interesting that this thread-- which is easily the one of the most entertaining on this site AND is one that has been active for THIRTEEN YEARS-- was started by a member who has but that one post to their name...
It's been thirteen years, steffck... do you know your thread is still alive today?
Edit: hmmm... funny. The thread was started in 2000... but the first response was not given until 2005.
No wonder the OP never came back
I'm not a nurse so please forgive some of my "non-nursing" terms. My mother is an LPN who retired after 35 years of nursing. The experiences that she had amaze me. This is not a ghost story but I found it touching. A patient was admitted that the staff felt should be a DNR. Unfortunately the family felt otherwise. After several weeks the gentleman coded. Staff members worked on him for quite some time and were eventually able to revive him. The first thing that the patient did was open up his eyes, look at my mother, and say "Mary, I was so happy there. Why did you have to bring me back?". He was transferred to ICU & later passed away so she was never able to ask him what he had seen and why he was so upset to return.
My aunt told me her experience when she was a student nurse. That time she was assigned in the 5th floor of the hospital. While she was writing her notes and she was facing by the window, a male nurse passed by the window and said hi to her. And because she was occupied my aunt answered back "hello good evening" and later she realized how come a person could walk pass infront a 5th floor window, unless he floats or he's not a human.
This is not a nursing related experience but it's true and I consider this as unforgettable. When I was in high school, I was fond of making handmade gifts for christmas. A night before the 24th of December, around 11. I was still awake and in a rush of making my christmas gifts. Later on, I heard a strange sound at the rooftop. That time my mom was still awake and I asked what's that scary noise. It's like a flying noise and something wants to come in. My mother answered probably just the cat chasing the mouse. So with her statement I just continued my work and didn't bother with the eerie noise at the rooftop. Since Philippines is a very hot place even at night I normally open the window when I sleep. After I finished my cards and gifts probably about 2am
I faced infront my mirror which I can see the reflection of my huge window that a person can actually fit in. While I was combing my hair suddenly I saw a monstrous being trying to enter my room but he could not fit in because of his ridiculously huge wings. That moment I felt like I was an actor in the movie in which I experienced that I froze and I hardly move my fingers, I was stuck. I wanted to scream for help but no words would come out. I wanted to run but I couldn't move my legs. I was so desperate in escaping that scene and that monster was also desperate in entering my room. Since I couldn't move or scream I just closed my eyes and pray sincerely to God. I was crying and very frightened. Later on that monstrous being hurriedly left and I think he sensed that my dad would come. After few mins my dad came and he saw me standing in front my mirror in shock and later I collapsed. When I woke up I told them what happened and guess what, they never believe me. They even accused me of being rebellious. Anyway, that was my first and last encounter with that kind of creature. But until now I can still recall the feeling of being extremely horrified.
