What's the weirdest baby name?

Specialties Ob/Gyn Nursing Q/A

Hi, I was wondering about some of those weird names that you've probably encountered in L&D and PP. I remember when I had my maternity rotation a couple of weeks ago, one of the nurses said she remembers a patient that named her child Placenta. I couldn't believe it that some child has to live his life named after disgusting afterbirth!

We had a Lucky Day this week. Poor boy!

There is a nurse in my local area named Princess.

me, too. (the same area, maybe?) but i knew her from going to high school, and have heard that she is now a nurse.

anyhoo, right beside her in the yearbook was a girl named treasure.

There is a nursing student I know named Tigress!

I have two...one couple wanted to name their daughter after both grandmothers. One was Shirley, and other Tina. Baby's name? Shirtina.

One unfortunate little girl was called Melena, and although the parents clearly had no idea, I thought "bloody stool" every time I heard the name.

You gotta love the old names people used to be called, usually with religious themes (the french-canadians anyway). My grandmother was such a religious fanatic that 3 of her daughters had Marie (mary) in their names. Two of my great-grandfathers were named Magloire and Pamphille. I used to work with an Archange (arch angel). I used to care for a Ressurecion.

I had 2 patients that were sisters and though I don't think the names were weird, they were different: Autumn and Summer. Their sister was Winter. No kidding.

You can't verify them because they (like the lemonjello and orangello and lady partss and Shitheads that have been mentioned countlessly in this thread) DO NOT EXIST.

So much of this thread is very culturally insensitive and insulting. Seamus? What's weird about that? Very normal Irish/Celtic name. Deshawn? Common in black culture. Mercedes?! Are you serious? Do you guys not realize that Mercedes was a name before the automobile was even invented?

Every name sounds weird somewhere. I have patients who've never heard *my* name before (Kelly)--I'm sure some of them think it's a strange name. I have Asian patients who can't pronounce my name any more correctly than I can thiers.

Also consider this: The very common, usual name "Jessica" was invented by Shakespeare for his "Merchant of Venice" play (thought to be derived from the Hebrew Iscah =OR=less commonly held, as a way to make the name 'Jesse' sound more Italian). I'm sure in the 1500 and 1600s, and later even, it seemed like a VERY odd name.

Kelly

WOW... You sound like you need some sleep. This is a cute discussion and you are reading more into it. I have an Indian friend named Puja and that sounded strange/funny to me the first time I heard it but dang I didn't offend her by asking her name and a little about its origin.

I had a friend who had always been bugged by the fact that his older brother got his dad's first name and his younger brother got his dad's middle name but he didn't get either.

He and his wife gave both their sons dad's first name as a middle name.

Let's see there was Vinita (name of the town where the State Hospital was located), then there was Polaris (mom saw it on a sign), the twins named Sunny and Hunny(note the spelling), many many Heavens, Heaven Leighs, Miracle (which is usually an oxymoron), Precious Angel, and Lovely.

I have formulated a set of rules I wish we could get legislated.

#1 If the child will never be able to say or spell the name.

#2 If the child will never be able to pronounce the name.

#3 If it will get them beat up at school.

#4 If it is just plain stupid.

Then we will assign you a name for your baby.

ROTFL no no not Polaris!!!!!!!

Na-Vay-Ah. (Heaven spelled backwards.)

My youngest brother went to school with brothers named Storm and Steel... their last name was Rocket
