What's your "School Uniform"? And Q's about the Love/Hate Thing

I wondered what you all wear to your schools as the School Nurse. Scrubs? Lab Coat and street clothes?

Also, It's been said that school nursing is something you either love or hate. What is meant by that? I'm guessing that things that are 'hate-able' might be dealing with noncompliant parents?

What are the things you love?

I have a ten month contract - do your contracts pay you through-out the year or do you find summer work? Are you off when your children are off?

Sorry for so many q's...I'm so nervous about starting this new job!

I have always worn scrubs which I prefer. I want to be wearing something that is lightweight if I have to run to the playground, gym, etc. I want to be recognizable by students and parents and I don't mind if I get thrown up on or bled on.

During the summer, I usually work at a day camp that allows me to bring my kids with me. In my district, I have the option of stretching my paychecks through the summer.

As with any nursing jobs school nursing can have some frustrating moments. That varies depending on the age group you work with, a lack of support from administration or parents that do not return phone calls.

I have visited this forum often and have found some great advice.

Good luck in your new job.

i too wear scrubs. some of my other co-workers wear street clothes, but i prefer to look like a nurse in nurses clothes ! it makes it a lot easier to get up and come to work too, just throw them on and go.

i get my pay spread out over 12 months. so it is nice to get a pay check in the summer.

what drives me the most crazy is the teachers. they are the biggest germaphobic in the world. if a kid has a runny nose they want them out of there. hey, we cannot send every kid with a runny nose home ! :smokin:

i love the kids and can handle the parents pretty well. i love the job, but believe me, i have my stressful days too.

all in all, it's a great job. good luck to you !

I wear street clothes. I used to wear scrubs but decided I liked wearing street clothes better. I am thinking of wearing a lab coat but havent made that commitment yet ;)

My daughter attends the same school as I work at, so we have the exact same schedule except for inservice days. Some inservice days, I bring her with me too. She is a big helper! She gets my mail and walkie talkie each morning :)

The biggest frustrations are teachers who dump on you all day, parents who are noncompliant, and administration who is not supportive- other than that, its a great job! ;)

Things that I love are the students and having the same hours as my daughter. I love it when she pops in during the day on her way to the library or front office. I like doing teaching programs and just watching the students during plays and field day, etc.

I get paid through the summer but also worked this past summer as a summer school nurse for another school district for 5 weeks.

The first year is hard, it will get easier with time. Good luck!

I would wear scrubs Mon thru thursday and wear street colthes on Friday. my biggest issue was the teachers and their germ phobias!

In NYC BOE scrubs are not permitted!! They want to stress that this is a school environment, especially for our medically fragile children. I make sure I wear comfy shoes (FLATS!!!) and I have neat looking comfortable shirts and slacks. Sometimes I miss the ease of putting on a uniform especially when I have gotten behind in the laundry!!!!!:lol2::chuckle:rotfl:

I wear scrubs Mon. - Thurs. and on Friday everyone wears jeans and school t-shirts or sweatshirts. I love being able to wear scrubs. I have elementary kids and have lots of cartoon characters and bright colored scrubs that the kids love!

Street clothes. The children's hospitals I worked in encouraged street clothes, so always have a closet of washable slacks and collared shirts appropropriate for street wear. I wear leather closed toed flats . The only time I wore scrubs even in acute setting was in NICU and recovery room. A jacket for meetings.
