What's your number of operating rooms to nurse manager ratio

Our hospital has 16 OR's, 8 nurse managers and 7 coordinators not including the OR director, asst. director and VP.

One of our nurse managers shared in the locker room that she has "never worked so little and gotten paid so much."

This made the nurses who work their @$$e$ off in the OR everyday annoyed to put it lightly. Often times the NM's will be seen drinking coffee, chatting about their weekend and have actually been seen cruising the internet while "working."

IMHO there are way too many chiefs in my facility and that puts a major burden on those of us who are left to do all the cases.

How many OR's does your hospital have and how many nurse managers and coordinators are employed in your facility? Is your hospital top heavy in management? Do your managers ever come into the OR's and circulate or scrub cases?

In this economy I am glad I am an indian and not a chief as I think I have more job security.

We have coordinators for gen/vasc, uro/gyn, OHS, neuro/plastics, and ortho. Our ambulatory center has one nurse manager for 5 ORs, ortho has a nurse manager for 6 ORs, and the other manager oversees 15 ORs. The nurse managers will almost never be seen onthe same floor, let alone in an OR. The coordinators don't scrub/circulate/give breaks except for OHS, but they will come back and help if you need it.

We have service coordinators for ENT/Eyes, Plastics/Ortho/Neuro, GU/GYN, General/Vascular, and Cardio/Thoracic. These service leaders are assigned to rooms in a pinch to scrub/circulate but are usually free. They give breaks and lunches in all services regularly.

We have two OR managers for 17 rooms. They very rarely scrub or circulate a case.

Specializes in Operating Room (and a bit of med/surg).

We have "specialty nurses" for gen surg, gyn/ent, H&N/plastics, uro, ortho, and thor/vasc. They routinely work in the rooms- occasionally have a "free day" to do things like updating kardexes, ordering/investigating new/trial equipment, and many other things. We have one manager for our 12 rooms (+2 cystos +3 outpatient surgery rooms)... she is also the manager for PARR. She doesn't even have OR experience, so she definitely does not relieve for breaks or anything! (haha as if!!)

Specializes in 2 years school nurse, 15 in the OR!.

We have 8 OR's and 4 coordinators. We have 1 educator and 1 charge nurse. Also, we have our director of surgical services. Never ever does our director or charge nurse circulate or scrub. Our educator either. The coordinators give breaks and lunches, and also circulate a few cases here and there...

Specializes in OR Hearts 10.

13 OR's, one director (also over SDS & PACU) 1 manager, 2 team leaders (charge/work alternating days) specialty coordinators that maybe get a day every couple weeks to do their specialty stuff. They are almost always in rooms. 1 educator.

team leaders will circ a room if working on the same days, educator occ gives breaks or runs a room on very short days, rarely see our manager scrub in and have seen my director scrub in to hold the heart when no one else available.

I guess the other question would be how many cases per day, not just rooms.

We average about 40 cases per day.
