Whats the ideal sequence for pre-reqs

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Is it A&P1, micro, chemistry

A&P II, CHem II

which should be taken first 2nd etc...

thanks

Chemistry first. Anatomy either directly before or at the same time as Physiology, don't skip semesters between them.... or with your A&P 1 and 11, I'd take A/P 11 directly after A/P 1. Micro anywhere after chemistry.

The sequence that helps you to get all As or as many As as possible. Chem and bio, if required prereqs, should always come first. Then anatomy prior to physiology, if they are of the separate variety. If combined, A&P I before A&P II. Micro can be taken whenever it is allowed, after chem. If your school gives you a choice between separate anatomy and physiology courses and combined, always take the separate courses. Most schools prefer separate courses and many are eliminating the combined sequence. If you take the separate ones, you can always transfer them, whereas, there might be situations where the combined courses won't be accepted.

Chemistry, Chemistry II, A&P 1, A&P 2, and Microbiology. I have to take it in this order because its a continuation. Try to take the next level course while its still fresh in your head.

So everyone thinks I should take Chemistry I before Anatomy ....and micro anytime after BIO...is that right...I took anatomy before but its beenover 10 years and have to retake I'm a 2nd degree seeker here.

Obviously I know chem1 before chem II but was looking for more specifcs for transition from all. Am I hearing you right to start with Chemistry....I do not have to re-take my Bio class and NEVER took chemsitry..yuck. Have to retake algebra also so that probably comes before chemsitry right???

Hate algebra with a passion....passed it but with a "D" in my drunken 20yr old life 16+yrs ago....ooops

thanks

If you can't stand algebra, look to see if they break it up for a slower paced trip. Some schools break it in half, sometimes you can get it in thirds or even in sixths. Takes longer, but makes it way easier to get an A at a slow pace.

do you mind explaining why chemistry before anatomy? I figured they could be taken simultanelously..but I totally respect anyones opinion esp if this is advice for A's...thanks again

Sorry, you are right, Chemistry doesn't have to be before Anatomy. Many in my school take them at the same time. Chemistry before physiology because so much of physiology is how the body works at the cellular level which is basically chemistry.

I didn't need algebra before chemistry... it wasn't required and I really didn't need it. There was not much math involved and it was pretty basic math and that much was well explained in the chem class. However, that chem was for nursing majors. The general chemistry class has algebra as a prereq, so I expect they get a lot more into the math side of chemistry.

I detested all math in my past college life. It was totally different this time around (20 years later). Amazing what a difference doing all the homework makes, especially when you do it with the goal of underestanding instead of going through the motions. Hopefully, you will be pleasantly surprised as well.

I love that you included your "past life" I too have one now as a stay at home mom of three I am so excited to learn again. I was told in my past education expierence to "go to college" but knowone ever told me my lack of interest would come back to haunt me or that I had to do good I just "had to go" I did not apply myself my last 50hrs were a 3.5 but I was engaged and dedicated.

anyway thanks I hope I'm more able to "grasp" the algebra this time.

At my school, you don't have to take Chemistry to get into the nursing program if you took it in high school and received a C or better. Well, I did, but it was like 14 years prior. I did not take Chemistry and went directly to A&P I, and I got an A. I studied my butt off and it might have been easier with the base knowledge of Chemistry, but it's still possible to take A&P without Chemistry if you're willing to study.

It depends on what your school requires. My school required Organic and Bio Chem before anatomy and physiology. My school also separates A&P I, II into anatomy followed by physiology.

You don't really need the chem before anatomy, but it REALLY helps to have it before physiology. Our physiology course assumes that you know what the krebs cycle is, sodium pumps, etc. A significant part of physiology is the way that the your body works at an elemental level. You could certainly take and do well without that chemistry, but it absolutely helped.

I haven't taken micro yet, but my sequence for science courses was:

intro to chem and an intro bio course

organic and bio chem

anatomy

physiology

pathophysiology (what I'm taking now)

micro
