What's a good ER magazine for learning?

Published

I get that monthly ER magazine that you automatically get when you sign up for ENA, can't remember the name but anyway....I don't find it particularly educational for me. It has lots of news, lots of studies that goes into all the details of how the study was done, etc. Yes it has the study results, BUT I really would love a monthly magazine that teaches me things.

I'm still a "new" ER nurse, have been there a year, but am still coming across new things, (of course I know I always will) and of course things are changing all the time. Like Nexium IVP, we just now got that, never had it IV before. Ok, it's in the drug book, no big deal, but new drugs would be great to read about.

Another nurse told me recently that studies have shown that levaquin PO is supposed to be just as effective as levaquin IV...how'd she learn that? That would be nice to know (although I don't have an option if the doc orders it IV, I'd still like to be armed with that info).

Or let's say other bigger things, like MIs often present as epigastric pain or jaw pain. I probably learned that somewhere, but the first time many months ago when I got a patient with "heartburn", no chest pain, no arm/shoulder pain, just epigastric pain, I was confused why triage had ordered an EKG...I asked about it and was told that it can be a sign of an MI...same with the jaw pain. Ok, now I know, but it would be nice to know BEFORE it comes up at work.

I've done a search on the internet, and the monthly ENA publication is the only ER magazine that I've found. Are there others that would be more educational for me?

Thanks,

The situations you're describing are about nursing, not just ED nursing. I suggest RN or Nursing2006. They're monthly, easy to read, and cover a variety of topics and specialties.

But keep reading the Journal of Emergency Nursing...you'll learn more than you realize!

RN is kind of Mickey Mouse; if you want a general nursing mag., Nursing 2006 is OK. JEN is an excellent magazine, particularly for an ED nurse.

Back when I was a student (long, long time ago) we weren't even allowed to use RN as a reference for papers; it was not considered a professional magazine by my school. I find a lot of the information dumbed down, personally. I also didn't care for their sales tactics; periodically, they would start sending me magazines then try to bill me as if I'd subscribed. I had not subscribed, and that really frosted me when they tried to put one over one me, more than once.

I get Nursing2006, and love it. It's a wealth of info that relevant to nursing in general, not just ED nursing.

I agree with Nursing 2006. It gives a lot of good background on pharm news, legal issues, ethical issues, as well as practice issues and disease pathology.

I used to get RN magazine, and didn't care much for it, but the last few issues belonging to friends seem to have improved so I might go with that again.

Also, Nursing Made Incredibly Easy is good for refreshing basic disease processes and skills.

I do like the ENA magazine because of the studies. Lots of foundational information there.
