What's up with Florida Hospital?

Published

I've tried twice to apply for new graduate nursing positions there and both times there's a declination email in my mailbox before I've even finished or submitted the application. There's no HR number listed anywhere and when I finally got to HR through the hospital switchboard, the woman connected me to someone who could "help me" and the call went to a phone w/no voice mail or personal message. Their graduate nurse webpage is also pretty outdated with many links not working (I mean the copyright date is 2004) and their Link to Your Future phone line never gets me to a real person.

Am I missing something or doing something backwards here?

Keep an eye out in the Tampa area, FL Hospital just purchased a hospital there and are building a new one ground up in Wesley Chapel, not sure how far along it is or when it's to open, google it :)

Do out of state employers require the interviews in person usually or over the phone?

Depending on how well you interview and think on your feet, it's possible to land a job over the phone. You won't know until you try, however I would start the process of getting a FL license because I've heard they are crazy slow in the transfers department. I'm chomping at the bit with the MI BON, I'm heading back to MI next month. I've been employed by Florida Hospital Heartland for almost 4 yrs and really no major complaints, just time for me to go home

Unless you know someone (like a manager or their friend) you will have a real hard time getting in any of the central florida campus'.

H1B's are going away for nurses. Every now and then I hear peeps that some law might loosen them up, but I don't think it will happen. It used to be that there were certain Educators (Filipino one, Indian one, and even a Korean one) who would squeeze a foriegn nurse in for a 3K donation. But I think even they can't do it anymore due to the lack of visa being given.

Anyway, chin up GN's theres always Saint Cloud Regional Medical center (which is horrible, but might hire you).

Based on what I know of the local market, FL hospital is trying to achieve magnet status for their main hospital... (their peds Hosp is already Magnet)... So they only want BSN RN as their lowest level of care... But as mentioned before, St Cloud Hosp and Osceola Reg. sometimes hire LPN's to work on the floors.

Please feel free to send me a MSG if I can be of any help.

Best of luck!!

No this is not correct at all. In fact Florida Hospital still has LPNs on board.

Just recently they stopped allowing LPNs to perform direct pt care but there are some still working in CTU (admitting and discharge holding). But they are definitely still hiring and retaining RNs with AA/AS degrees. There is no way they could employee only BS degree nurses in the next 5-10 years to staff their mega facility.

Of course they would prefer BS degrees, always have.

Magnet status does not require only BS nurses just a certain %.

While Florida Hospital is greatly "encouraging" nurses to get the degree it certainly isn't the lowest level of care. All administration staff are required to have BS by 2013 but they have a long way before all RNs are 4 year degree holders.

This week, I spoke with a FH nurse educator and asked if their GN program accepted older nurses who have no hospital experience into their GN program. She said yes but that my application would probably not be consisdered because there are too many GNs who had recent clinicals. Her main concern was that I would not know how the hospital system worked and the GNs would because of their recent clinicals.
