What's the deal with Columbus State admission?

U.S.A. Ohio

Published

My friend applied in January 2009 for their traditional ADN program and was accepted (as all students are) and was told her start date was March 2011. In the meantime, she applied twice to their online program and was rejected.

Their website states for application dates...

Traditional Track

  • Jan. 6-15, 2010 for the Autumn 2010 class
  • July 1-9, 2010 for the Spring 2011 class
  • Jan. 10-19, 2011 for the Autumn 2011 class

I called the school and asked: "So, If I apply during the July 2010 application period and meet all the requirements, I'll definitely get to start in March of 2011?" Their answer? YES OF COURSE YOU WILL!

Is the waitlist gone at CSCC or is the nursing school misleading me? I don't want to hold out and stay in Columbus an extra year only to be disappointed and realize I could have started at Tri-C sooner after all.

Also, what is the deal with CSCC requiring the anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and biology sections for the Hesi A2 exam?!

They require organic/biochem as a prerequisite, but a lot of the chemistry seems to be stuff covered in general chemistry (nuclear chem, molar relationships, stoichiometry, etc). Additionally, biology isn't a prerequisite in any way, shape, or form. Anatomy and physiology are taken during the nursing program and are not requirements. The Hesi review book states: "A one-year course in anatomy and physiology should be taken before the student prepares for the anatomy examination." Yet, CSCC expects us to rock that section BEFORE taking any form of A&P. What is up with all that?! Luckily I've taken biology and general chemistry for science majors and I've taken anatomy (not physiology) so I'm a bit better off, but that seems really unfair. Additionally, I took anatomy twice (As both times) and both were high level with human cadavers taught by medical school faculty and there is a lot of anatomy stuff in the review book I never learned. Needless to say, I'm frustrated and worried.

Thoughts?

Anyone know when orientation is/ when we'll be getting our info packets for fall '10?

I received my packet today. :) Loads of information to go through about shots, health care forms, drug test, fingerprinting, etc.

Yup, I got mine [packet] yesterday too... so much to do!!!

Does anyone have a prior bachelors degree while going back for your ADN at Columbus State? I'm having trouble getting financial aid. I have 211 quarter hours from my bachelors degree and prerequisite coursework. Columbus State made me submit a copy of my 2009 federal tax return (even though all the info is on the FAFSA they have), a sheet where I had to check I had a bachelors degree (even though they have my transcript and my FAFSA said I do), and petition to get financial aid since I don't meet the Standards of Satisfactory Academic Progress. After all was said and done, I was denied financial aid because I have too many credit hours! I did get subsidized loans at Tri-C and Cinci State, but CSCC is denying me!!

I called the direct loan servicing center where I got my $20k of stafford loans for my bachelors degree and they say there are no problems on their end - I am good to go to get financial aid. It is just CSCC that is refusing me. I can't pay for my education without these loans... any ideas?!

Also, how long before you start your ADN program is the background check due??

Have you gone in to talk to the financial aid people? I know that there are ways to petition to get financial aid even if you have over 150% of the credits allowed. I haven't worried about financial aid yet, but eventually might have to. I believe it is possible. Check to see what "major" they have you listed at as well.

As for the background check, we recently recieved our paperwork for fall admission and the background check has to be done fairly soon, I think. I believe it had to be done before the July orientation, but I could be off by a couple of weeks. It was pretty easy to obtain. Pay for it on campus then go to Campus Public Safety where they do it. They send it electronically straight to the BON.

I am certain you cannot register until it's compete.

Yea - I submitted the petition along with a personal statement. It was denied :( I guess I need to go talk to them again. You can petition twice and they reserve the right to revoke your financial aid at any time with or without reason.

Thanks for the info though!!

I had to appeal because I have a multimedia degree from columbus state and a bachelors from devry. They let me have 42 credit hours and I have already used that up and now how have to pay out of pocket for the rest of it. I have talked to numerous people that they have done this to and it is quite common. I am just glad their tuition is relatively cheap or I could not continue. I still can't afford it but I make some income from my glass blowing so I will just have to get it that way because I have had no luck in finding a job, even at Target. :(

I was lucky that I found a great job at a pharmacy when I quit the hospital job. However, it is ridiculous that CSCC refuses to give you financial aid when the government is willing to loan you money - the only hurdle is CSCC's refusal. Why won't they allow us to at least get LOANS to pay for out education?! I was able to get subsidized loans at every other school I applied to, both 4 year and 2 year.

I know, it is really stupid. It is a loan I have to pay back, why the hell can't I have it? It is not like it is free money. The government would let you have it but Columbus State won't let you. It is probably an Ohio thing. They probably figure if you have that many credits than you are already educated so you don't need any loans. It is kind of rude since I could not get a job in my original degree field even if I wanted to because I am obsolete since I have been out of the field for so long.

The sad thing about jobs nowadays is a lot of companies won't even consider you if you are not already employed. I really don't know how to get a job anymore since I haven't worked for 10 years. My job history is so old no one wants to hire me. I was going to college for multimedia when I got pregnant with my son so instead of paying for daycare we decided I would stay home with him and now I can't find a job, not even a crappy job. : (

Are you in Columbus?? My company is hiring... I could e-mail you the application. It is flexible around school scheduling (open 24/7), benefits are good, full-time job, secure position, $3,000 tuition reimbursement yearly, and you'll be an expert at pharmacology! :)

And it is not an Ohio thing. I had no problems getting subsidized loans at Tri-C for 09-10 and 10-11.

Yes, I am in Columbus. I will private message you my email address.

So the CSCC application was different than I thought. I logged in and just kept hitting refresh. It let me in and popped up with a page showing my cougar ID, name, address, and phone #. It then asked me if I was a LPN or CSCC grad of respiratory therapy or surg tech. Then asked me if I was a tech prep student or with the OhioHealth GRAD program. Then I hit submit. After I hit submit, it just pops up and says YOUR APPLICATION HAS BEEN RECEIVED. No confirmation # or telling u what # you are to submit. Gee whiz I sure hope they got it. When I log in again, it just starts the process all over again.
