Hello everyone: :)
I have a friend who works in the ER currently, has been there for 3 years. She wants to move into a CCU, and was wondering if she should do some time on a tele or medsurg floor first. She went from college to the ER, and is worried that having no floor experience will make it hard for her to work in a CCU. What do you guys think? Should she go to a tele unit, or would it be better to go to a med-surg unit or to heck with it all, and just dive right in?

I worked ER for 9 years. I recently transfered to Critical Care without any floor experience. Tell her to go for it she will we OK.
Thanks pinto, I will tell her. I know she is really nervous, and from what I hear, not getting a lot of support from her co-workers.

Hi,
I have worked in CCU for several years. I would tell her to just "go for it". I transfered from a tele unit and it was helpful but three years ER experience will be just a valuable.

I work in a CCU and I have also worked with RN's from the ER; our skills in assessment are basically the same. Some things will be different such as trauma skills, etc. I say "go for it", and hopefully she will have a great preceptor. She should make the transition just fine.

Depends on how sharp you are. I started as a new grad in ccu 24 years ago and loved it. never looked back and thought i made a mistake.

As long as she is strong w/ cardiac- recognizing rhythm changes and knows what to do about them- she can learn the rest.

Any decent ED nurse can learn to work in CCU. Similar knowledge base, just a different environment and focus.

I can't help but wonder why she is not doiing the inquiry.
Hmmm... how very suspicious of you. Perhaps she doesn't have a computer?
