What are you most worried about in regards to starting nursing school??

Published

I'm a junior in a university BSN program. I remember last summer I was very anxious to start and I had a lot of questions.

Post your concerns and maybe we can help!

I'm afraid of totally embarrassing myself in clinicals, by getting sick.:barf02:Or doing something stupid. :banghead:

I can almost guarantee that you will have to face some very intense situations, often including large amounts of blood or feces. Nursing will be difficult for someone with a weak stomach...

However, you may come to find that once you are in the hospital setting, your mindset may change. When I'm at the hospital, I become focused on the task at hand, rather than how gross it may be. It helps keep me calm (and not nauseous).

My biggest fear is now that pre reqs are finished, and I have made it into the program I will find out that nursing isn't for me. That i have wasted two years studying to get into a nursing program and when I go to clinical I just can't handle it! Then what????
Have you had the opportunity to shadow a nurse (or two)? Doing so will give you a good idea what happens on shift. There are so many areas of nursing. Hopefully, even if you don't like traditional types of nursing you can do something different. I happen to love psych, I did my time in med-surg, I've been a manager, and I had some 'flings' early in my career in ICU, a rehab facility, and oncology--all different, and all 'dream jobs' for someone (and detested by others!) Pay attention in your clinicals for what you like/dislike in each rotation and use that to select a field of nursing when you graduate.

I would greatly appreciate ANY reassurance that I'm overreacting...however, at this school, there are so many that seem to not pass this program in one try, it's almost as if it's not a big deal. No, no, no! I'm at the point where I am crippled with fear of not passing in the 18 months I had originally planned for. I don't account for the difficultly that lies ahead, and I am fortunate in that I don't have a family to worry about (I don't know how you ladies with kids do this! Kudos!), but I've never wanted anything so badly in my life, and simply don't have the money to repeat anything. It's taken me so long to get here, and at 34 years of age, I'm more that ready to become a nurse. The big obstacles that frighten me are #1: the HESI. and #2: how hard everyone says Psych is. I would just like to know that since I don't have a social life, and I stay pretty focused that this isn't as impossible as I am beginning to think it is. Granted I don't need straight A's, I just want to peace of mind that I will be able to drive back to Denver in 2014 after some hard work.

I am so scared of everything! the unknown, the life you carry in your hands, feeling like I can't prioritize. I have three kids and a husband to take care of as well as the studying aspect. For me, I just worry until I actually get into a situation. I think everything is just a huge scare until you're thrown in the mix. First fear though, NOT getting into the program this coming fall '13. Second? My dosage test 6 weeks in. I have to pass with a 90 or better or I'm out of the program...sigh...

Hi Im a first semester NS in the ADN program at a local college and what I wanted to know is: What do you do when you study for hours but still fail a test and what do you do when you start to feel overwhelmed by the amount of material you're given and expected to know within a short period of time??? Any advice would help. Thanks in advance.!

I plan on applying to nursing school within the next year or so and I am truly scared of everything. I am terrible at math and I am not good at science at all. I just keep thinking I will fail out because I'm not smart enough.

If your not good at science work harder. Don't give up because if you keep telling yourself that your not good your setting your self up for failure. I used to be a C student in High school. I never tried. In college I tried to take every class seriously and sometimes I dind't. I wish I took all my requirements seriously because nursing school is like 5 times harder than the requirements they make you take

WORK HARDER! GET SERIOUS ABT THIS FIELD OR GIVE UP! that is the reality of this career path.. It's none of that I am not good at something mentality. If your not good at it keep trying or give up. It is possible to get through nursing school if you suck at everything and work hard. You just won't get your proper sleep. But doable. If your talking like this now and you don't change how you think and approach nursing You'll really have a hard time even if you somehow get into nursing school. I used complain about my requirements. theres really no point in complaining. If you think you don't know something take the time you have today to learn 5 new things about science and slowly your memory of math and science will increase and get better.

Need motivation? Watch the movie "Rudy". When I was in school and got down thinking I couldnt do this anymore, I would watch this movie, which is a true story, and the challenges he faced and worked through, gave the motivation I needed to keep going.

I think I watched that movie at least 2-3 times a week sometimes. It made me cry everytime I watched it, and just talking about it would start the water works, but it is so inspiring... I highy recommend it!!!

Also listen to Zig Ziglar, he is a motivational speaker, very funny and effective.

And never forget.... YOU CAN DO IT!!!!

That's one of my favorite movies too. I saw that when I was in 10th grade and made me cry. I just loved the whole plot so much and love Sean Astin too.

Getting in. :clown:

But seriously, failing freaks me out.. I don't want to cause any injuries.

Getting in.

I second that! Lol I have waited so long already that my fear is not doing well because of this ridiculously long wait. Im worried about retaining all that information, but I guess I got a lot of reviewing to do once I get an acceptance packet. Ive also been worried about doing well in general. There is a lot of work ahead of us!

You guys apply to schools that have no waiting lists. The only reason you should be worried about nursing is if you more B's than A's and if you have a C in a science course. Don't worry once you get in they don't expect you to be perfect at everything. You guys will be just starting out. I am not gonna lie though they do shove a lot of material in your face. So it will help if you do go over all you A and P stuff b4 you start nursing school. If you know all that then nursing school/ the first semester / quarter shouldn't be that hard. It's all A and P and patho and micro with common sense nursing practices

I'm not really sure what you mean by NS in the ADN program but I'm guessing it has something to do with Nursing lol. I'm only a freshman going for BSN but during highschool I attended a nursing program that helps juniors and seniors to become LPNs. So when I would study and fail a test I would look at what I got wrong and do more reading on it. The chapters we had to read would be almost 60 pages plus homework and if you didn't do it you'd look stupid during class discussions, projects where your classmates were just WAITING for you to say the wrong nursing diagnosis or wrong medication pertaining to your project so they could correct you lol, and clinicals 3 days a week sometimes on floors with nurses that didn't want to work with students so all of us would just follow one or two nurses lol. I JUST PRAY lbs. They crammed so much into the two years for us to learn that nobody went on to take stateboards. I have my CNA and I'm working at a hospital down the street from my campus. I say the program helped me to get a little peak into what BS Nursing school may or may not be like. I know it's gonna take a lot of work so I'm just learning to do the COMPLETE OPPOSITE of what I did in the LPN school and that's to actually get an understanding of what I'm studying and not just knowing it for a test, because when it's time to get out there in the real healthcare world if you only retained the information for test then you won't know how to apply it to the real world situation. But prayer really helps. I try to pray in the morning, once I come home (commuter) and then at night. I've found that having a close relationship with Jesus really is keeping me stable during my first year of college and plus I'm a churchgirl anyway so I ask my church to pray for me when things feel overwhelming, or talk to people that's already been where I am, that really helps.
