My hospital is revamping a breakroom for nursing staff. Actually, they are finally making one. This is one that is a central breakroom in addition to small mini breakrooms (that are actually unused pt. rooms) on individual floors. The hospital is actually asking us for our input for what we want the breakroom to include. I'm interested in what others are thinking as well...
If you could, what would you want in your breakroom??? TIA~

Enough power so the fridge, toaster, sandwich press, dishwasher, hot water boiler and two microwaves can run at the same time without shorting anything out!
And yes it was me that caused people to have no dinner by shorting out the appliances :uhoh21:

Outside the break room I would like a sign stating " do not disturb" .....
Is-In my perfect world (I know I'm dreaming and it will never happen)
-A large table and nice comfy chairs for eating.
-No TV
-Some other color on the wall besides white, maybe a sunshine yellow.
-nice coffee machine
-A kitchen with microwave,fridge,and stove
-phone
-card/ID entry
-Brookstone large recliner messaging chairs.
-Water cooler
-No interuptions
-A clean break room-it's amazing how many filthy break rooms I've seen.
It would be to good to be true to have all the above. I guess it would be hard to leave a nice room like that.
Our "breakroom" is a very small room that looks like it was used for storage and electrical stuff 40 years ago. There's one long rectangular table that takes up 80% of the room. You have to squeeze around to get in and out of there. It's always dirty and smelly in there. There's 1 trash can, 1 old 1982 tv set, and the call light alarm thing that goes allll the time.
If we want to eat we have to walk down the hall to the kitchen to get our lunches and to use the 1 microwave we have. There we have a coffee maker too. But it's not a private place because patients tend to sneak in when the doors are left open.
I wish for a nice sized, clean, well lit room with more than one table. Also, coded access would be nice too. With our refrigerator, a new microwave, coffee maker, and lots of comfortable sitting space. Also, a newer tv with cable. Nice clean decor. And maybe a clean locker room with shower stalls and benches.
Oh, and all of these places must smell like flowers. That funky poo/hospital smell has got to go.
One thing I WISH the break room on my floor had was enough seating for everyone. Actually, as I think way back to all the break rooms I saw visiting about 10 different hospitals in nursing school, every single break room on every single floor never ever had enough room (or seats) for everyone to sit when it was lunch time. That is key.
One thing I LOVE about the break room on my floor is that we have a massage chair and a little relaxation area (I think some family who loved us nurses donated one to every floor in our hospital a year or two ago). Every day I work, I sit in it and eat my yogurt while my food microwaves, and its my 3-minute break from the bustle. We also have a massage therapist that comes around once or twice a month and sets up her own little chair and gives 10 minute mini-massages... its a nice way to have a break in your day (and it promotes her business). And even better, she does it for day shift and also night shift (in the evening since we all do 12's).
Other things our break room has that I like (granted they just re-did it, so it is nicer now): small lockers big enough to hold a purse and maybe some shoes that we put our own locks on, a coat rack with hangers that is big enough for everyone's coats, mailboxes, a clean fridge & microwave, a coffee pot (with supplies), cabinets for us to store our own mugs & dishes in, sink, a TV with remote, windows, phone for calling home, and a key pad to get in the room. And the only things up on the walls are a bunch of nice colorful posters made by social committee about upcoming birthdays, introducing the new hires, and info on various activities/ fundraisers the unit is doing for different medical foundations or for the unit Christmas party.
and don't forget helga, who's there to massage our feet.leslie
haha you took the words right out of my mouth..how about adding Sven to give back massages with a station next to Helga...ahhh back massage....and a free vending machine...or even better catered meals every shift in the nurses lounge and a GOOD coffee machine like the MD's have...ahh that would be great
After the day I had today I would have loved one of those Margarita machines.....and some nachos with chesse and jalapenos
that would be great..imagine after shift was over...i would have one of those mega jugs 64oz. type you get at your local convience store full of margarita...ahhh..."don't ask me any more report questions I am enjoying my margarita"..haha THAT would be great:yeah:
