I"m a new grad, and i see so many jobs with STAFF NURSE II positions. What type of nursing would qualify you to be staff nurse II???
- only hospital experience count?
- what about home heath? i heard home health hours count towards SN II, is that true??
- What about school nurse. ?
- agency nursing??

It varies with each facility, as it is part of the clinical ladder system. You will need to check with the individual facility to find out about the answers to each of your questions. But, generally, a SN II has at least 1 yr experience + some other qualifications. Sorry, not much help.....

I believe each hospital/facility has its own clinical ladder for advancement from novice to expert nurse (level I-V). You would probably have to check with your hospital for specifics.

Interesting. Actually I was started as Staff Nurse II as a totally new grad because I had my BLS and ACLS. But yes, from what I have seen there are protocols one must pass through to get to the next levels. My senior year, my preceptor wanted to go from SN IV to V. She was advised to write essay on how great she is with patients. Then they review it and research info and give promo or not. I am sure all hospitals are different. Check around if ACLS helps.

this is definitely a facility based decision. my former facility had a career ladder that used the novice-expert designations rather then sn i or ii. however, i agree with the others that this sounds like a novice-expert nurse ladder. in any case, talk to hr. there is a job description attached to the various designations. in order to be above a novice at my former facility, you had to have been a nurse for at least 1-2 years in acute care or worked as a nurse in another setting with patients for many more years (3-5). plus, you have to pass trainings and sign off on competencies (mostly skills) found in the acute care setting. it also helped if you were trying to further your education or have furthered your education.

The difference between SN-I and SN-II is having 6 months experience and a pulse.
