What will prepare a new grad better? A student nurse tech position or an externship. I plan to do my senior practicum in a critical care unit also. I am currently working as a nurse tech in phlebotomy/ER and am transferring to the units starting in January. It is a smaller hospital. The nurses are great and like to teach students. The other 2 hospitals are larger and get the traumas. I have two choices for this coming summer. I could stay at the hospital and work full time as a SNT or I could do an externship and maybe work a couple of days as a tech. I would really like to go straight to the ICU or ER when I'm done with school. My goal is to be as prepared as possible. What do you all think will be a better option?

Find the busiest and highest acuity ICU that you can get into and go in head first. Ask questions and listen and learn.
