  1. Hey all. Looking for advise. I'm currently in a 21 bed ER in a community hospital for just under a year and half. Before that 1.5 years in a ed clinical decision unit and 1 year in an ICU. My significant other is looking at different job opportunities. My options are easier: find a larger ER or travel. My ideal job would be faster paced busier ER. I enjoy coming to work, working hard and also like the being treated as one of the solid members of the team. I know my strengths and weakness so I don't won't to get in over my head traveling but also do not want to get the run of the mill only stable pts. So my question is when a traveler comes to your ED, what is your expectations of them and how are they treated/assignments? Advise? Thanks
  2. did you get the job?
  3. you get 6-7 patient scenarios with what do you think is going on, what are you going to do, what orders do you expect and then some generic interview questions. Good luck
  4. I just posted this in the Burn ICU forum also but wanted your feedback also. So I just accepted a position in a burn/trauma unit and start in Feb. Do you think I am specializing too much too soon? The program has all critical care new grads going thru the same education then some extra education on burn patients. If there are no burn/trauma pts, the unit does get overflow ICU pts. It is a large high acuity hospital. Do you all think, I will still be able to function in an MICU/SICU after I gain some experience if I want to float to different units? The other hospital I am waiting to hear back from is half the size but still Level 1 center. Their unit has similar training but the nurses float between all the ICU units: MICU, SICU, and CVICU. Which do you think would be a better option in the long run? Thanks

  6. I am doing dream day very soon. I was told that I am doing 3 hours in one unit then 3 in another. What do we really do when we are shadowing the nurse? Are informally interviewed, questioned/tested, participate like we do in clinicals, etc? What are some good questions to ask during that time period on the units? Do we interview in front of a panel of people or just a manager from one floor? I know they grade us on how we answer questions so if we score lower do they offer us jobs on other floors? Does WHC use travelers? I get anxious before the interview so the more I know the more comfortable I feel. Thanks, zram44
  7. Hi all, I have an interview for a SICU position next Thursday. I get pretty anxious with interviews. Are there any common interview questions that I can go ahead and mentally prepare for? Any questions or scenarios that are used to throw a new grad off? I am working in a small 10 bed ICU as a student tech and doing my practicum in a Level 1 trauma center. How much should I talk these up? Thanks for the advice. Zram44
  8. I have been looking on their career website but have seen nothing for new grads. When will they be hiring for new grads? Am I looking at the right site? How is their program? Any interview advice? Thanks
  9. I am looking to move to the DC area this December after graduation. I am interested in Critical Care. I am a second degree student, have a good GPA, and work in a small ICU as a student tech. One nurse recruiter I talked to was saying that it is difficult just to get a job in the area since there are so many nursing schools. How true is this? I have talked with four hospitals so far. Does anyone know how competitive Washington Hospital Center, Howard University Hospital, Holy Cross, Georgetown Hospitals are for new grads? Thanks
  10. Hi all, I am going to be graduating in Dec 08. I keep seeing advertisements for these new grad critical care internships but then check the hospital system site and it gives limited info. Does anybody know of a list of all the hospitals that have these programs so I could contact recruiters. Could anyone recommend some for me to check out. Im considering moving anywhere so all options will be considered. Thanks
  11. I am currently a first semester senior in Tn and am looking to move to Seattle or surrounding areas after graduation. Are there any hospitals that have critical care internships? How hard is it for an out of state student to get a job in Seattle? I am wondering where I should start looking. Thanks for the advice.
  12. What will prepare a new grad better? A student nurse tech position or an externship. I plan to do my senior practicum in a critical care unit also. I am currently working as a nurse tech in phlebotomy/ER and am transferring to the units starting in January. It is a smaller hospital. The nurses are great and like to teach students. The other 2 hospitals are larger and get the traumas. I have two choices for this coming summer. I could stay at the hospital and work full time as a SNT or I could do an externship and maybe work a couple of days as a tech. I would really like to go straight to the ICU or ER when I'm done with school. My goal is to be as prepared as possible. What do you all think will be a better option? Thanks
