What will happen to LPN's if the BSN in 10 bill passes?

Published

hello! i am currently an lpn student, a little more than half way done:yeah:but anyways i was wondering what will happen to lpn's if this bill requiring rn's to have a bsn passes. will this benefit us or hurt us? i live in nys and there is no way lpn's are going to be "phased out" as i have read on the internet that people have been saying this for years. so i was wondering if anyone knows how lpn's will be affected by this?? thanks so much!!!!!!!!:redbeathe

I'm also in NY and it depends on where you are I guess. LPNs have been phased out in my area being limited to nursing homes. I HOPE they don't ever require BSNs from all RNs. I don't think that's right as I have no desire to get my BSN and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Crunchy mama, I have noticed the same thing when I have looked at what jobs are available. There are not as many jobs opportunities for LPN, mostly nursing homes.

I dont see how requiring a BSN could ever happen. Think of how many thousands of schools would have to close. Community Colleges could no longer offer nursing programs.

*scratches head* I haven't heard about this. Is this nation-wide or just specific states?

I know that Magnet hospitals push for higher education, and the hospital I work at has decided to hire no more LPNs. The LPNs that work there will continue to keep their job.

i'm not sure about all states, but i know that ny & nj are working together to organize this. where i live, there are always job openings for lpn's. there has been lots of talk about ma's taking over the lpn role but that is just never going to happen. here in ny ma's can't pass meds or administer any form of injection and the list just goes on. i do see tho that there are a lot more opprotunities for rn's in the acute care settings. but i don't see that lpn's will be phased out completely here. i just wonder what is going to happen! i feel it could go either way at this point! only time will tell i guess!

LPNs being "Phased out" to nursing homes???? Haven't LPNs always been the grunt of nursing homes? Not all RN's want to work in hospitals..POINT BLANK end of story.

OP, stick with your LPN program. You WILL get a job. Of course, you will have to get the RN so you won't be limited. IF THAT'S WHAT YOU CHOOSE TO DO!!

My momma has been a nurse (in NYC) since she was 19. She's a LPN to Associates Degree RN and has NO intention of moving on. Many "old school" nurses don't want to move further and I don't blame them because guess what if the hospital doesn't want to hire them, trust and believe a nursing home, a home care agency, a clinic, or a staffing agency WILL!
