What do you wear at work?

Published

OK, so in preparation for my provisional start date of Sept 15th (please Mr Postie bring me my TWP) what do nurses wear to work in Calgary? (Interested in others areas too - just for nosiness' sake!)

What footwear do you like best? Please no croc debate again though! Are there any preferred colours (eg best for NOT showing a VPL etc) & where is the best (read cheapest but still good quality) place to buy.

What do you class as the essentials for having in your pockets? Interested to see if/how different it is to ours in the UK

I'm holidaying in Florida 1st so would it be cheaper to get things there do you think?

Thanks everyone!

Oh my - I don't know how to cope with ALL this choice!:D

I mean I come from a country where we wear school uniform (never had to choose clothes to wear to school) then started nursing where the uniform was issued by the hospital (no choice again) & I'm still in a hospital job - where the uniform is issued by the hospital!!!!

Wait till you go shopping, seen some nice stuff in Walmart but not really looked closely at them :)

Keep it simple. Navy, teal or burgendy (that doesn't look right) pants and then you pick tops to go with them. Prints or solids.

Be a wild woman!!!

I wore brown shorts, a pink top and sandals today. But I was only popping in with a going-away gift for one of our fellows who is leaving for Philly early next week. She is a little bitter that she wasn't offered a job here (and so are WE!!) but she's a young woman and the other candidate isn't. I would so much rather have her than him any day - hour - minute. She will be deeply missed.

Of course the unit was full and we have a patient in the Harry Potter Room (Bed 10 3/4) which used to be the x-ray viewing room. Soon we'll be putting them in bunk beds. SHHHH don't give them any ideas!

I let one of my coworkers buy me lunch, since she wanted to tell me about the interview she had last week on another unit, and if she paid, we'd both get the big 10% discount CH has for staff these days. Might be worth it if the food was reasonably priced, or even marginally edible...

The detours around the hospital weren't too awful, but when the university is back in session it's going to be horrendous. I can't wait until they start tearing down the outpatient residence at 83rd Ave and 114th St so they can build the $100 a night hotel they're planning for out-of-towners attending the Cross Cancer Institute, the Edmonton Clinic and the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute. That'll be just lovely.

Back to clothes... Walmart's uniforms are reasonably priced but contain a large proportion of polyester. Fit isn't bad; they have some licensed prints such as Winnie the Pooh and Betty Boop. Word to the wise, Work Wearhouse's uniforms fit on the generous size so if you normally wear a large, try a medium. Many of their uniforms have Teflon finishes so that they're stain and moisture resistant... truly. I had a spill at work one day and even though I couldn't wash my top right away, the offending substance washed out completely. I was really impressed.
