Would you leave your daughter in labor to go to work? My daughter was in labor and I called off work at 4 am for a shift that didn't start until 3pm. My boss knew my daughter was pregnant and that I had someone to cover for me. My boss called me on my cell at 7:15 am yelling and screaming at me that I had better come to work, she actually wanted me to leave her alone. I just got done working 3 doubles in 5 days and a 12 hr shift all in one week. If I could have been at work I would have been. But my family comes first. Needless to say I no longer work there. Was I wrong? Will this affect my getting another job? I appreciate any advice I can get.

So did she have the baby?

You know the answer to your own question Bridget. Of course you were right. You gave sufficient time in calling off 11 hours before your shift. Your boss was wrong and had no buisiness calling you other than to say congratulations. You were not wrong, how can you be wrong in being there for your family when they need you? Your boss is a creep unless I am missing something in this.

So update please. :)

I'd have done the same thing---and HAVE!! My family comes FIRST. You gave sufficient notice and arranged your own coverage. What more could she want? Shake the dirt off your feet and press on! She's an inconsiderate jerk.

You certainly did the right thing, sounds like that place will have to hire two or three people to replace you!!!!!

Good riddance and don't look back.

Since you're probably going to get a "will not rehire" you won't get much of a reference. But explain to potential employers the nature and it should be o.k. Or ask them not to contact them.

Congrat! One the baby! You did the right thing! I have and will do the same type of call off! Family comes first!

i totally agree with everyone. i don't have children but when my dogs get sick and when one had to have surgery, i took time off and would have quit if my manager had said no. love ones always come first and jobs come and go. congrats on the new baby!!!

Just be straightforward with new potential employers about why you were let go. If they don't understand that you did the right thing, you probably don't want to work for them anyways. Any employer worth working for will agree that you did what was right.

You followed proper protocol for calling in. Your boss had no business nor right to ***** at you. I hope your daughter is doing well with her new addition!

My first thought when I opened this thread was, "Knowing that you would want to be with your daughter, you should have made arrangements ahead of time."

But ... I SEE THAT YOU DID THAT!

Therefore, I don't see that your boss had any reason to complain. I agree with the others. Be sure to remember to tell any future potential employers that you had pre-arranged coverage for yourself and that your boss had been aware of that.

Did they fire you or did you quit? Man that really sounds harsh either way and she was very unprofessional. Can I ask if she had any other reasons for getting so mad?

Maybe I've been lucky but I've never had a manager act that way - but then again I've had pretty good managers who were professional and human.

They had their flaws (as we all do) but if they acted that way, their bosses would have fired them.

I doubt they would say they wouldn't rehire you unless you had other problems that would prevent it. Don't you think? If you were a good employee and this was the only serious incident then why would they say they wouldn't want you back?

As long as you have other good professional references then I wouldn't sweat this one.
