I tried the alcohol sniffing trick with a student the other day... Learned it in the ED. It does actually seem to help, if the person is not already vomiting or extremely nauseated. :). I give them an opened alcohol pad, have them take a good sniff, wait a minute, then another sniff.

When my DS was born, I had a c-section and ended up having a horrible reaction to the anesthesia- nausea, vomiting, vertigo for 12 hours...no fun. But I still totally remember the anesthesiologist after pumping me with phenergan and zofran and still no relief, putting two alcohol preps, one under each nostril and telling me to "breathe deeply". It actually did help!

Of course now that I have this valuable tool no one has complained of nausea ?

Working at our Pediatricians summer camp 20yrs ago, used flat coca cola along with alcohol cotton balls.

Tried the alcohol sniff test today. Student thought I was crazy but went with it... wondering how to chart it... Alcohol sniff? Olfactory therapy?

Same. Gave them the swab did not explain, student asked for another one! However, did not work for a teacher with vertigo + nausea.

Knowing my luck, it would get out that the nurse is teaching kids to sniff alcohol.

I guess I picked the wrong week to give up sniffing alcohol preps.
