Thinking of moving to sacramento? Can people recommend any hospitals? Mercy? Sutter? Which areas are nice to live?
I am a nursing student, I currently live in east sac and love it...but housing prices have really sky rocketed over the last few years only leveling off this last year. As people have told you, there are lots of nice areas. Some people love the carmichael area, not to mention elk grove/pocket area. Rancho cordova is nice, I have a friend that lives out there and loves it, kind of rural community even though your only about 15-20mins from downtown. People are right about the area around UC davis Med center and the Tahoe park area...but it is getting better. The hospitals are a wide range...I am currently in clinical at Sutter Gen and did last semester at Mercy Gen. I worked for mercy for a few year in woodland california...I must admit that Mercy seems more concerned with money then any of the others. UC davis, was a right on assessment lower pay but great benefits (my wife works there) and parking is high. UC is getting ready to open a new 100 bed ED and they of course are the main Trauma center. Sutter pays probably second best and I have heard great things about them. It seems like a nice place to work and the nurses seem really happy there. Kaiser is the best paying of all and some like the fact that you really don't have to deal with insurances (they have their own). What I suggest for anyone thinking about coming here is take a short vacation hit the slopes in Tahoe or even a trip to Frisco, Mendocino or any of the coastal towns just to liven up the trip. (Of course tour sac!) make sure to run through the Fab 40's in east sac...Ron Reagan's old house from when he was gov of california is located there so we do have a bit of history. Good luck and maybe one day I'll end up working with ya since I want the ER too!
What are your impressions of the RN job market and general ballpark wages. ( I know I can get on salary.com but i always like to hear from some working people in the area). I know the houseing market has gone down somewhat in the last year, but is still a bit spendy. It looks like the wages make up for it according to salary.com. Any thoughts?
Student nurses are scared of Sutter. Wages run anywhere between 34-38 a hour base pay.
Oh I don't know about scared of sutter, its the best place that I have worked so far. Your assessment of wages seems pretty good, there are many variables to consider as you know so to give a estimate is hard.
I can tell you that the order of pay highest to lowest is Kaiser,Sutter,Mercy,UC Med.
Shriners is in there too but I am unsure of the pay for them...they keep a pretty low profile around here for some reason.
Really?! that would be of great help..thanks psqrd!!! i don't want to undergo agencies to get a job there coz it'll take too long. thanks so much;)
I asked my classmate who also works at sutter and she said that they have not sponsored anyone for a few years. It seems that they are currently dumping most of their money into the nursing school extended campus that they started. I have not heard about any of the other hospitals...If I was you I would check with the traveling nurse companies...I heard that they are good about putting people through...or email the specific hospitals that you are interested in. They all have nurse recruiters and I am sure that you would get a timely answer. good luck, let me know If I can help any way.

At Sac State some of the student nurses have been treated real bad at sutter.

Thanks for the reply:lol2: I heard that UC Davis does sponsor before, I dunno if right now if they still do it. Anyway, I did email a few hospitals in sac and i'm waiting for their response. Thanks again Psqrd! It enlightened me of my current situation:idea:
I have worked at UCDMC for almost 3yrs (2yr as a student, 1yr RN) and I love it. There are many things to consider. I love working in a teaching facility. UCD is a level one trauma center and we receive many critically ill patients from all over Northern CA. We have access to docs 24/7. We have an awesome CNE and on my unit, there is always a Clinical Resource RN and other experienced RN's who are always willing to help. During my first year, I became certified in TNCC, ACLS, CRRT and have taken several classes offered by CNE. I have no complaints about my salary, I make a good living. There is always overtime. It depends on what type of enviroment your looking for. We have a lift team, Action RN team and great benefits. As for areas to live in. Roseville, Lincoln, and if you don't mind the drive, El Dorado County is nice. Stay away from South Sac. Elk Grove school district is overcrowded. Wilton and Rancho Murietta is nice. I have heard many good things about Mercy and Sutter. As for sponsering students, call (916)734-2011 and ask the operator for RN recruitment. Hope this helps.

If you were asking me, yes there are 2 hospitals in the yuba sutter area. They are both ran by the same medical group (non profit). There is also a hospital in gridley (20 minutes north of Yuba City) and a hospital in Colusa (20 west of Yuba City), both of those hospitals are rural hospitals that are much smaller in size. As for the hospitals in Yuba City and Marysville they are much larger but aren't as large as some of the ones in Sacramento.
