What to tell boss?

Hi All,

So, I've been accepted to nursing school in the fall :yeah: I'm in A&P I now and will be taking A&P II and Chem this summer...fun...

Anyway, I presently work in legal marketing (talk about a switch) and I work 9:30 - 5:30 M-F. I haven't had a problem with getting to my A&P I class this semester but A&P II will be a summer course..so that means class is every day except Friday..from 5:30 until whenever. Big problem..I don't get off work until 5:30 and it will take me time to get to campus (and park).

So, I need to request my hours to change. Sounds easy enough, right? Wrong. My boss is the "motherly" type..and somewhat nosey..and she would definitely ask what is the reasoning behind the change (not that she wouldn't let me change my hours..hopefully).

Also, attorneys are NOTORIOUS for waiting until the last minute to request something from us. So, to help with that..I am the one that stays a half hour later to cover such requests (even though they are few and far between).

I don't want them to know I'm pursuing nursing because I will be quitting in June and I don't want to warn them beforehand (seriously, do employers warn employees they they are being fired or laidoff beforehand? No).

But, I need to tell them something so I can leave a half hour early for these next few weeks (from May 4 - June 22).

One suggestion I got was to tell them I'm taking a nursing assistant course so I can make more money in this economy. I think it's good..but a course that lasts almost 2 months..and is EVERY day except Friday?

I dunno..what do you guys think?

You're going to have to tell them eventually anyway, so just tell them. You can offer for that half an hour to be your lunch break. Many people get off work early by taking their lunch break at the end of the day and employers usually go along with this. Or, if the office is unlocked, you can come in half an hour early.

No..I need a full hour of lunch after working with attorneys all day.

I would just come in a half hour early and work 9-5.

I don't want to tell them now..because 1) they may start looking for my replacement and force me to leave before my intended time. 2) I just prefer not to.

I just don't want to lie about it. I could tell them I was taking a class..but with my boss..she's nosey and I dont' want to have to tell the who..what..when..where..why..just too much and really none of her business since what I do on my time..is on my time..

I'm going to be facing this soon too... except that I'm hoping my boss will be supportive of my decision to go to nursing school. I'm quite awhile from quitting my job, unlike you, so maybe I'm not the best person to offer advice.

You say your boss is "nosy," and maybe you saying you'd rather not disclose the reason why you're requesting a schedule change would irritate her... but .... who cares? She'll be curious for a little while, and even if things get uncomfortable... you're leaving soon!!! I mean, obviously stay on good terms so you can have her recommendation, but when you finally do give your notice, be sure to tell her that you really wanted to tell her about your class but you didn't feel comfortable giving her notice that far in advance. That way, you never have to lie, and you never have to be unprofessional about it. As long as you are courteous and she respects you, she won't bug you too much about your change in schedule. She may be nosy, but unless she's obsessive, she should understand that sometimes people just need to change their schedule for whatever's going on in their lives. She should drop it after that, business as usual.

hi (again) lovelymo! :p

i definitely understand what u mean about not wanting your employer to know what you have going on .. and i think you had a good idea to say that you just wanted to make some extra money in this economy. but if push comes to shove, just tell them anyway. its better than being caught in a lie (hopefully that wont happen)

ive been up front with my employer since day 1. heck, my manager AND director even wrote awesome recommendations for me to get INTO the school and they are very supportive of my aspirations so long as i can still maintain the same energy and professionalism while im still here (at my job). so you never know. maybe you could have one of those "talks" with your boss? just a one-on-one to discuss the change you may be making? i dont know, just an idea.

and besides, i dont think a 1/2 hour change is much of a change at all. maybe you can pick up an extra work load while youre there to make up for it? bottom line, if push comes to shove - nursing is where you want to be and you gott do what you gotta do for it... hopefully it'll all work out for you.

Well, it did work out. I ended up telling her I was taking a pre-nursing course to see if I wanted to go into nursing. The only concern she had was the coverage during the half hour I was gone. I worked 9:30 - 5:30 so that there was someone here a half hour after "official" close of business time..just in case an attorney needed anything. She still wanted that coverage so for the days I'm in school (Monday - Thursday) another girl is working the 9:30 - 5:30 hours. Which was fine because I already talked to the other girl and told her she may be the one they pick to cover me.

The funny part about it is my boss said she hopes I enjoy the class..but not too much that I end up leaving..HA! That's what I plan on doing..so we'll see how THAT goes down. I give my notice on June 18th and I can't wait!

Yeah..and it's giving me a taste of how hard it will be when school starts. I'm in A&P 2 now and with working 9-5 and then school from 5:30 - 8:30..I am TIRED when I get home..and still have to read and study! Last night I was thinking I don't know how I'm going to do it because I will be working come September.

But, I have no choice!

I have been feeling the same way - my current job is over 40 hours per week and I'm going to start classes in just a few weeks (one at a time for the summer, and I'm going to have to do two at a time in the fall and spring, all while keeping my current job. I have a feeling I'm going to completely lose my MIND. Anybody doing this have any advice? I don't have kids, so that's one huge stress that I don't have on my time, and my husband is a teacher so he gets home relatively early and might be able to handle making dinner, etc... but I'm so used to being able to come home, unwind, cook, exercise, play with my dogs, maybe even watch a movie with my hubby and then go to sleep. But I have a feeling the next two and a half years (1 in pre-nursing, 1.5 in nursing) are going to be high stress, no time, pull my hair out... but I know it's what I want, so even if I'm crazy, I'm going through with it!

well you know what they say - there's nuthin to it but to do it! LOL .. to be honest, back when i was getting my first degree i took 5-6 classes and still worked full time (and even overtime when i could) .. talk about TIRED. but i got used to handling high stress so when someone tells me theyre taking 2 classes, im like WHAT thats so easy! :chuckle i just studied at work when i could, or on breaks & lunches... its definitely hard and it will take a lot of you but 2 yrs will fly by, at least thats what I'M hoping for .. ahhhhhh, oh to stay up til 4am studying again :typing

Yeah, I keep reminding myself of when I was in college (for my first degree) and I was in my last semester, graduating early, so I was taking majors seminars and other tough courses, as well as coaching a highschool volleyball team and planning my own wedding! Oh, not to mention volunteering as a Young Life Leader. But I remember that as one of the coolest times in my life even though I barely had time to breathe. You MAKE time for the things you really want to do, and all the unimportant stuff gets squeezed out.

Not that anybody cares, but for anybody who is following this thread, I wanted to try to calm your fears about talking to your current boss about going back to school for Nursing. I tried to be very professional about it, set up a meeting with her in her office this morning, and started by telling her that I love my current job (true, so I didn't have to lie), but that I wanted to tell her that I've registered for my prerequisite courses to go back to school for nursing. Thankfully, I won't be leaving for about a year - I'll be taking a course or two at a time until I get into a nursing program - so it was good for me to be able to say that I just wanted to tell her in advance, keep her notified, and let her ask any questions she had. It couldn't have gone better - she said she was happy for me that I had decided to take this step (I am currently an administrative assistant), and that she thought I would make an excellent nurse. She said it's great I told her this far in advance, so that when it gets closer to the time when I would be leaving, she can find a replacement whom I can train, and there will be no surprises or hard feelings. Telling my boss has taken a huge weight off my shoulders and feels honest, professional, and reduces later awkwardness. So if you're contemplating this issue, my advice is... if you have any kind of rapport with your boss.. tell them!
