What would you do??!

Nurses General Nursing

Ok, so I just started working as a nurse at a Family Practice.. I'm actually training and just finished my first week. I won't be put on the schedule until the beginning of October as an employee, but I am getting paid for my training.

Anyway... this job is about 5 minutes from my house, 830am-530pm with occasional saturdays from 9-1pm and pays $17/hr. I'm like one of the only Registered nurses in all 5 locations, b/c most are MAs, X-ray techs, Lab, and a few LPNs. We are required to take one half day a week so that we never go over 40 hours. So most people average 36-38 hrs a week (losing money).

Well, a friend that graduated nursing school with me told me she is working at an Endoscope center, and they are ALL RNs there and Endoscope techs. That office is 10 minutes from me (a little further away), hours are 8am-4pm and they pay $25/hr with 3 weeks vacation. So this job I'll make about $1280 a month more before taxes!

I sent a resume in when she told me about this job, before I started at my current job at the family practice, b/c she told me they might be hiring in October. I figured it didn't hurt, just in case this job doesn't work out for me or something. Well, she just let me know today that the manager is calling me next week for an interview. Wow! So, I'm not really sure what to do. I feel kind of bad starting a job and then quitting... BUT this job just sounds better all together.. hours, pay, vacation, and the job itself. That extra money will help me out when I have to start paying my student loans back, and my husband is going to need a new car soon b/c his is having so many problems and is old.

What would you do? And if I do quit (if I'm offered the job of course).. how would you go about it?

Specializes in Critical Care/Coronary Care Unit,.

Well definitely, don't quite the 1st job until you're offered the endoscopy job. If you decide to take it, just resign gracefully. Give your 2 weeks notice and if you want to offer a reason (which you don't really have to), just say that a better opportunity presented itself. In the end, you have to do what's best for you and your family. Good luck. Hope you get the job.

Specializes in LTC, med/surg, hospice.

I think you have gotten great advice and I would definitely take that Endo job..most people I know in endoscopy are happy with that specialty. I think it's pretty stable as well.

if offered the other job, I would probably take it. I would tell the other place honestly the reasons. For one, the money. They need to know that 5 mins away, nurses are making close to $10 more an hour. I would also say that you really need your 40 hour week. 4 hours a week over a year, adds up. That said, money isnt everything. I have taken jobs for less money to be happy.

thats not very much money for an RN

Actually, starting pay at hospitals here is $18-$21/hr.. depending on the hospital. For a doctor's office, $17/hr isn't bad... and $25/hr is GREAT!!! I'm in SC btw.

Specializes in Geriatric, Pediatrics.

HAHA..this is all to familiar!! However...my situation was a little different...my family was friends with the people I got hired by! Well what I was told over and over, do what is best for you! I was told by one job that I interviewed with, to quit my job...i started only days ago and take the job they had open. HAHA what a joke, when the hospital told me this I was shocked! Well good thing I didn't quit my job, because they ended up not offering me the job in the end! However, in your situation, I would give your 2 weeks notice, and tell them that something better came up. Give them a resignation notice, and show your appreciation. The only reason I say this is because you are getting cut out of a lot of money, and hours and probably better benefits. You need to do what is best for you. That is what I did with a few jobs, and I know the feeling that you do not want to leave your commitments, however if you do it professionally it should be ok. You are only recently into the training, so they wont be losing too money. Do what is best for you, and you will most likely get the most experience at the new place. Its tough, but you will be a lot better off...there are several times I have been in the same position. Hope that helps, just do it professionally, and you will be great. It happens all the time! Good LUCK!!
