:idea:Can anyone tell me what statistics is like? I am taking it this summer and I have no idea what to expect. I did well in Math 111 (college algebra), but I am so not a math person. It literally takes everything I have to get a B in math. I have been accepted into a nursing program(two-year) and am taking some classes this summer so that when I graduate I can go right into the BSN program. Thanks!!!
yes it's the same class we are all talking aobut that's required for nursing. I'll bet you one out of ten people would say it is hard, and this could be due to the professor as someone said before, look at ratemyprofessor.com, and also doing a summer or minimester helps because they only cover the important stuff. Trust me, it's easy. May be harder for some than others but if you're having difficulty, talk to the professor until they explain it so that you understand it. you'll be FINE! don't worry!
I think it has a lot do with the professor, but overall, I had a good experience and got an A. My teacher let us use all of our notes during tests and quizzes. The final was worth a chunk of our grade, but surprisingly, they were the same questions as our previous tests but with different numbers. The material was very easy in my opinion, but my teacher would sometimes not explain it in a clear way (he was from a different country and had an accent). The formulas you use pertain to the specific scenarios, and the steps became repetitive as the course moved on. If you take great notes, you'll be fine.
Actually, there are many, many "stats" classes. The content is up to the professor or the department. The one I took was not the one you're taking though.
I was not alone in thinking our class was difficult, even the math majors put in a lot of time.
Not only did the original poster not mention or imply a specific school or a specific class in the first post, statistics is a branch of mathematics.
If you go on to do a master's or PhD in nursing you may take several courses in stats. Some mathematicians make it their whole careers.
There is definitely not just one single stats class that everyone in the whole country takes. Standard deviation is not the end of statistics, it's the beginning!
But it does appear that the stats courses designed for most of your departments aren't that bad, so I wouldn't worry too much. You can request a syllabus from the department if you're concerned.
Sure, for MSN programs you might need Research/Advanced Statistics or a graduate level stats class, but I seriously doubt what the OP is going to run into will be all that challenging. If his/her class is a MATH 200-level, I'm sure it's the basic statistics class that majority of us on this thread are reassuring him/her about, that the majority of us also needed for entry into our nursing programs.
Slarson, a good way to find out would be to look at your course description, or call the math department at your school and speak to an advisor, or even contact your professor early and ask for a copy of the syllabus, to see if you think you can manage the level of work with whatever else you need to balance in your life...work, family, other classes, etc.

okay, after the last reply I am wondering if we are talking about the same math class. It's probability/statistics or MTH243. Most of you responded with it is very easy but the last post made me wonder, hmmmm? Let me know those of you who replied that is was easy if it was the same class I am going to be taking....Thanks you all!!
