In LTC do you prefer working 7-3, 3-11, or 11-7 and why???
I just left a job I had for two years that I worked 6p-6a on a rotating schedule and I adore that.
I'm moving back to my hometown in Florida where I will be working either 3-11 or 11-7 and I would much rather work night shift but I will definitely miss those twelve-hour shifts. Night shift is awesome because you have more time to do what it is you have to do and you don't have to deal with a whole lot of family members, supervisors, and whatnot.
Yes I agree, NOC shift was the best 10p-6a. Less politics, more time to spend with the residents and more time to complete quality work. Also.... less likely to have to deal directly with state surveyers.
I preferred 11-7. There is always a large amount of meds due on every shift at LTCs, at the exact same times. But nights had the least (where I worked). And with 30+ residents, it seemed to be the only time I was able to get everything done. It was also easier to find residents, because they were in bed, not off playing bingo, receiving physical therapy, smoking on the patio, out at appointments, etc. And finally, there were less "big wigs" to deal with at night.

I work 7-3, and enjoy it because it most enables me to spend time with my family, including a preteen child.
I worked second shift for a long time and enjoyed the shift but never saw my family.
I've never done 11-7 regularly (just picked up third shift every now and then). I like working that shift but don't like what it does to the rest of my life.
The biggest drawbacks to first shift are getting up crazy early (for me anyway, I have a long commute); dealing with having SO MANY people at work and constant interruptions for all the different departments; not being able to find patients to admin. meds, do treatments and assess them because they are always at PT, rec, etc,; having the heaviest med passes and all the dressing changes to do in one shift.
Second was nice. I liked sleeping in. The med passes were more manageable. After five pm or so all those superfluous people would leave and it would calm down. The only bad times were when we were slammed with admissions.
Hi,
I have worked all three shifts several years on days, several years in 3-11 and one year on 11-7. I love days because you have a normal life with your family, but you have a lot of bull crap going on. Second ehh..lots of admissions, sun downers ..Third I actually enjoyed working, if I was able to sleep during the day I would have stuck it out. I had so much time to assess my patients, I always felt like I was able to do a really great job when I left in the morning. No administration, no rude family, no drama. The down side, I always felt sick, very moody and I got FAT lol

I've worked them all and like things about every shift. Now I do 3-11 because it works with the family. DH watches the kids when I'm at work. 3-11 weekends are nice because there is no management in the building, no therapy etc and not many docs are in on the weekends. In a way that could be a bad thing too.
7-3 is nice because you work regular hrs, it is faster paced.
11-7 is nice because for the most part, everyone is asleep, no family to deal with much slower paced etc.
