What reason is used for call offs!

The company I work for has a no fault policy for call off's-This means you can call off for what ever reason you want nobody will ask and it is ok.

So when ever anybody calls off I never ever ask for a reason I just ask when their next shift is and if they think they may be back.

This doesn't mean staff don't provide me we reasons why they are calling off, over the years I have heard some excuses and sometimes I have to bite my tongue not to say 'ARE YOU KIDDING ME'

1/ I have to go to the airport and pick up my girlfriends daughter-really!

2/ My car wont start-so I am not bothering to find somebody to drive me 2 miles to work

3/ I am annoyed with my co-worker so I am not coming in today

4/ I am tired I had a busy weekend (not tired from working, was a weekend off)

5/ So and so always calls off so I am calling off today

6/ The cable guy is coming

7/ I booked a dentist appt

8/ My doctor only works on a Thursday

9/ A tree fell down in my garden

10/ It's my once a month migraine

What I want to say is please dont tell me why you are calling off, I don't care because if you tell me it makes me mad:mad:

Uhm, migraines can be debilitating; something a nurse should know. Perfectly legitimate reason to call off. :uhoh3:

Yes I agree except the person who called off was male and if he was scheduled to work mondays he would call off-we stopped scheduling him on a monday for obvious reasons and if we ever ever schedule him now by mistake he calls off!

By the way as an RN and a migraine sufferer I know how debilitating a migraine can be-believe it or not

This is pretty bizarre, but notable as an ultimate call-off. An employee where I worked at years ago called off, because her husband had been murdered. She stated that she would be back to work in two days. We were all in shock r/t the tragedy (and also thinking what a strong person she was), and many co-workers visited her at her home to provide emotional support and ultimately the obligatory tuna noodle casserolle. Also, another co-worker called off with the flu (August). Our workplace had a "sunshine" committee (go figure the name) that organized collections for co-workers when there was a death in the family. So, needless to say, a collection was taken up for this employee. Two days later, said employee and oher co-worker (whom she was having an affair with) were arrested for the murder and dismemberment of her husband. Body found buried in backyard. The employee who organized th the collection (treasurer of said "sunshine" committee) was mortified and had to give all of the donations back. Did not have to explain after the headlines hit the local newspaper. Shortly thereafter, the "sunshine" committee was defunct.

OMG

Not everyone who calls in is screwing over their co-workers. Sometimes people actually do get sick.

I love the people who drag themselves in, as sick as dog, because the unit just wouldn't survive without them. I really, really love when they share their germs and get me and my co-workers sick. Professionalism at its finest.

and your point is?

There are posts belittling the impact migraines can have. There are cyclic natures to some peoples' migraines. Just info - that's all :)

Well, you didn't say that in your OP. And men can get migraines , too. He didn't say it was a menstrual migraine. It's always nice to get additional information "after the fact." :uhoh3:

No, just tired of people belittling migraines. And the point is, you did leave out information in your OP, which made it look like you were denigrating someone for calling in for a migraine.

IN 2006 I had a car accident I had a head injury and I suffer from migraines a lot because of my injury, for 1 whole year there wasn't a day went by I didnt have some form of migraine or headache and the treatment was extreemly painful, I had injections into my face, neck and head- so I would never belittle migraine sufferers.

I had a job where no one got sick time, so a lot of people worked sick. We had office epidemics all the time. I also had a very obnoxious co-worker who used cod liver oil for everything. She had utter contempt for western medicine, despite having an organ transplant.

One day, during yet another workplace epidemic, she said very loudly, to no one in particular, "Good thing I'm taking my cod liver oil and not letting my guard down." Two weeks later, she was in the hospital with pneumonia.

I think it's less the whole migraine thing but more when they have their "monthly migraine" three times in the same week. Or like a PP said, the person who had three car accidents in less than two months.

yea i would understand if every other day they were using that excuse (and if they really WERE having them that often then I think they need to start on the road to disability!) That would be ridiculous! But if it really was only 1x a month then that's a "normal" frequency for them and I'd be understanding towards that. Some people really can pinpoint things like migraines to 1x a month (like if they get them when their period is coming.) I tend to be sympathetic though in general.
