6 monts ago, I got my first nursing job in a medical spa. I do laser treatments, Botox. Juvederm, etc. etc. etc. I really enjoy it. Most of my clients are nurses themselves. EVERYDAY for the last 6 months, nearly every nurse that has laid on my table has asked me. "So, what's your REAL job?", when I tell them that I don't have another job...this is my job...they kind of roll their eyes at me, give me the pity look, and say, "Well this isn't REALLY a nursing job". Even my own mother who is an R.N. says that a monkey can do my job! It has made going to work very frustrating, because everyone is looking down on me. I love my job, but hearing that people think my job is worthless is very degrading. (Honestly, I don't find these nurses very wise....criticizing someone holding a laser or needle to your face).
I just got offered a position at a SubAcute/Rehab Center, I start in a few days (nervous!!!). Well, when I told my patients at the medi spa about that job...thinking *whew* they aren't going to be so condescending toward me now. They STILL rolled their eyes, shook their head, and said..."Oh well, at least you're ALMOST there to becoming a REAL nurse." I am really apalled at how judgemental other nurses can be! What is this so-called REAL NURSING???? This wasn't just one or two people...at least 20 nurses have criticized me for just working in a medispa...and now they are turning around and saying SubAcute is also NOTHING.
Honestly, I don't need their praise, or acceptance...but hearing it everyday is annoying. I went to college, got my B.S.N., and took the NCLEX just like them. I take care of people everyday...maybe I don't work in a hospital, but I sure as hell am a NURSE. What's with the attitude from these nurses???
Medispa nurses, Clinic nurses, LTC/SubAcute/Nursing home nurses, school nurses, camp nurses, so on and so forth....we are all nurses! Right?
Very simple. People are stupid. Are they asking the dermatologist who's shooting them up with Botox when they're going to become a "real" dermatologist? Nope. Doctors specialize, and just because a dermatologist couldn't take out your gall bladder, it doesn't mean she's less of a doctor. That surgeon taking out your gall bladder would make all those nurses getting work done in your office look like Jocelyn Wildenstein. And sub-acute care? Not easy work. What is it that the Scarecrow said in the Wizard of Oz? "Some people without brains do an awful lot of talking."
Medical spa's nursing is sort of a new type of nursing job, helping the others stay youth looking and getting rid of scars etc... I think that's why some dont' consider it as real nursing practice.
Hosptial is a traditional places many think doc. nurses should be praciticing what they learned from school. However, Rehab. facility( short term), LTC facility are also a place for nursing practice, nurses there use their nursing skills to help cure, care, heal and monitor their patients' need.
You passed the NCLEX? You have a license? Look on it..is it a nursing license? You are a Nurse..it doesn't matter what area you work in. I had a dear friend tell me not long ago that I was still a nurse even though I wasn't working right now..I worked for and earned that title and so did you..Do not let those that are insecure with themselves take that away from you...
the real nurse in my opinion is ;
the person who can take care of his patient
the person who can make the nursing procedures
the person who know about nursing more than others
the person who respect his job and can make ppl respect him
and offcourse in addition to the nursing license
finally it is not important what your job is ,the important is wether it is legal or not
and to what extent u r successfull in it
Honestly, They are probably jealous of your job. I would bet you have better hours then them and make the same if not more money. I'm guessing you get to go home and have dinner with your family and many of them do not.
I myself would love your job also. Oh I have worked at nursing homes, hospitals, clinics, children's group homes. I consider myself a nurse at all these places, not just the hospital.
