Hi everybody,
I'm starting my first hospital job and am in the training program right now. Since I started nursing school I've found myself collecting quotations that help me get through the day. For all you veteran (and new) nurses, I'm wondering what quotes help you focus, vent, relax, or whatever. Not necessarily looking for quotes specifically mentioning nursing, but instead about life in general.
Here are some I've collected so far:
"Never pass up an opportunity to keep your mouth shut." -- Unknown origin
"To be happy, we must not be too concerned with others." -- Albert Camus
"Don't let your limitations overshadow your talents." -- From a fortune cookie
"My life has no purpose. My life has no direction. No aim. No meaning. And yet I'm happy. I can't figure it out. What am I doing right?" -- Snoopy from "Peanuts"
Thanks!
Dave
These comments have all been so nice! I run around most of my night saying things like "Oh for blankety sake! Now wth happened!?"I'm also generally a happy bubbly type who enjoys the running around and general chaos that is psych nursing!
LOL and I have been known to say "OHhh for spoon's sake" (as opposed to fork.....)
(It is 10 til 7, little coffee, that's all I got......) LOLOLOLOL
Many of the common 12 step sayings are helpful to me. The serenity prayer is one.
One day at a time. I modified this one to a second/minute/hour at a time depending on the circumstances.
This too shall pass.
Progress not perfection (I'm a perfectionist) As a new nurse this is a good one to remember.
Cultivate an attitude of gratitude.
Minds are like parachutes, they only work when open.
The only normal people are the ones you don't know very well-LOL.
"There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle."
Albert Einstein

Thanks everyone for more quotes and I look forward to even more. To "blueheaven," I love your modification of the serenity prayer to the second/minute/hour. I sometimes find myself saying, "If I can get through the next second/minute/hour, then I'll be okay."

Others have already mentioned the Serenity Prayer. which is one of my favorite things. I have alink to it on my phone, so I can bring it up anytime I need it (not a great one for memorization, and the second part is my favorite). I am afraid it highlights my family history with 12-step meetings...
God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to
peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.
