What is the process for getting into your school's LVN program?

The school I applied to for Fall 2013 has us first going to an information session then, taking pre-reqs- Nutrition and A&P, and getting a C (75) or better in the classes, then taking the TEAS test and needing a 64 for reading and 60 for math.

After that we turn in an application with our scores and grades.

We wait to receive an acceptance letter in the mail, that tells us what we need to next.

I just received the letter and it said that I need to write a 2-3 page narrative based on an interview with a practicing LVN, 3 letters of reference (that's going to be hard for me since it's summer, but hopefully I'll figure something out), and a handwritten paper telling my special interests or hobbies.

I will have an interview on July 10th, which is when all that paper work is due. (Only 2 and half weeks away!)

Then hopefully I'll go on to the next part, which is survival camp in August before school starts, I'm not quite sure what happens there, but I'm sure it's like an orientation telling us what we need and stuff like that.

We also need shots, a CPR card, physical exam, and a background check, but I don't think that's due until school starts.

Just incase anyone was wondering, this is for HCC in Houston, TX.

Now your turn! :)

It's probably going to be different for a college degree LPN program than for a vo-tech school type program. Most LPN programs here are 11-12 months full time days.

Requirements for the typical vo-tech adult ed LPN program here:

Be a high school grad or get your GED by the time you start the LPN school.

Submit the application, pay the fee, get your HS transcript sent to the LPN school.

Take the Work Keys or TABE or whatever test that school uses and get an acceptable score.

Meet with the school's director of nursing or whomever does the personal interview.

Have a criminal background check & a drug test.

Get your immunizations and CPR card.

Pass your nursing classes with a 80% or better.

Hmm...interesting. Here (Chaffey College/So. Calif.) it's 3 main prereqs (A&P, Math for Healthcare Professionals & an intro VN course). Pass those with a C or better and you can apply for the VN program; if you get accepted (plan on straight A's to get in - I didn't...) you go on to orientation, drug/health/psych screening, get your uniforms, etc. If not, you're on the priority list for the next cohort. In my case, I didn't make the cut for the initial selection - had a few candidates that had to decline, so I was offered a slot as an alternate. So...assuming I can get my records in order I should be good to go for mid-August.

The evaluation is actually done in the intro VN class - you get an intro to the program, some history of nursing & practice with dosage calcs, pt. assessment and oral presentations, plus the "Why I want to be a nurse" essay. Out of all of what I did, the essay is probably what got me in - gave the prof. a taste of what it's like to be a caregiver for an elderly parent over the course of four years. Made it abundantly clear that I knew EXACTLY what I was getting myself into.

WoW! After reading all of these, I feel fortunate that my schools admission process wasn't that intense!! I had to submit an application with a letter of why I wanted to be an LPN as well as all transcripts ($35) then take the TEAS-V entrance exam and pass ($100) then an interview with a few of the teachers and the director (free lol!) Then wait for the letter of acceptance. After I got that we had orientation and had to do a drug test ($20) FBI/BSI background check ($65) CPR ($40) and get all necessary immunizations and titers. (Painful on my wallet as well as my arm!!)

What school did you go to?
