What pre-nursing classes should I take together ?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

So I am going the BSN route. I am taking my pre reqs at QCC ( way more cheaper this way, and I get to knock out most of the pre-reqs here) and then I will transfer to ST.Paul's for the nursing classes to complete my associates then to a four year college( most likely York because they have a bridge program if you have your associates) to complete the BSN. I have a liberal arts college degree so I have credits transferring towards the program. I want to get good grades ( As and Bs). Science is my strong suit but the formulas and math are tough for me.

So the classes I need to take are listed as followed:

Nutrition

a &p 1

a&p 2

microbiology

statistics

intro to chemistry

organic chemistry

So My questions are as follows:

Is it wise to take chemistry in a short session (7 week) ?

Should I take statistics and a & p 1 together ?

Should I take microbiology in a short session( 5 week) ?

Whats are some study tips when taking statistics, into to chemistry & A&P 1?

Anatomy and physiology is arguably your most important prerequisite. I would NOT take it over a summer course. No way, no how. Not because it's difficult, but because you want as much time as possible to learn the material and retain it. Whatever you do, just don't do that. I'm in my second year of nursing school and I've still never taken chemistry. I don't feel it would've helped much at all, honestly. Everything you need to know is explained and taught in class and in the textbooks.

I was thinking of doing the following:

Spring 2018:

chem

statistics

summer (7 week) 2018:

a and p 1

fall 2018:

a and p 2

nutrition

spring 2019:

micro

summer 2019:

organic chem

Take A&P 1 with stats for Spring 2018. Then switch the micro with the organic chemistry. I took micro over the summer and it was the best thing I ever did since you'll have time to focus only on that. I highly do not recommend for you to take A&P or O Chem for the summer because it will be brutal.

I second someone elses response above, about taking Microbiology as a summer/winter course. I took Micro last summer to get it out of the way. The professor we had seems to have a reputation of being very difficult. The class was VERY hard. A HUGE amount of information crammed in 5 weeks. My class started out with like 25 students and I think at the end there was less than half left. I had two lab partners bail on me, heh. I guess it can depend on how hard the professor is. I usually catch onto science courses readily and even then, I definitely worked for my passing grade for the program. I had literally no life the entire month of July.

All of the classes you just listed I took over 15 weeks. A&P is super important.. you will want it to stick with you throughout your pre-recs all the way through nursing school. Stats was a very difficult class for me.. I took it online and I hated it.. I spent 15 hours a week on just online homework (it was ridiculous). Chemistry was very easy for me, and I think you should be able to do that just fine in a short period. Microbiology is difficult.. I would NOT rush that class at all. You don't want to rush through it and then have to retake it.

tips: A&P - study groups 13423492834%!!!! discussing the information rather than trying to do it on your own will help a LOT.

Try to know where your strengths are when taking classes in a shorter time. Is it a subject your interested in? Do you think you will have difficulty with the subject matter? If you do decide to take classes that are condensed make sure you have the time to dedicate to the class.

Yeah for the most part I know for sure I want to do the a& p courses in the longer semesters.

The math and the chemistry are what worry me the most. But it's like I don't want to be in school for ever. I love science it's just the formula part in the chemistry is where it gets a little complicated for me. Once it comes time to take those courses I will not be working as much. And I borrowed the for dummies series from the library so I can get a head start and familiarize myself. I'm pretty worried about statistics.

Here's how I would take these classes in this order:

Fall

A&P I

Nutrition

Intro to chem

Spring

A&P II

Micro

stats

Summer

Organic chem

I have not taken organic chem, but the rest of the classes I've taken. Nutrition was extremely easy and so was stats. It really depends on who you have for a stats prof. Previously, I took A&P I and micro together last spring semester and it was A LOT OF WORK! I wish I would of taken A&P II and micro together instead. If you are not rushing to get all the prerequsites done, then I would take one science class at a time, but if you're really pushing for time, then take two science classes. I took A&P II in the summer and it wasn't easy, but I did get a really good grade. Good luck.
