What pre-nursing classes should I take together ?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

So I am going the BSN route. I am taking my pre reqs at QCC ( way more cheaper this way, and I get to knock out most of the pre-reqs here) and then I will transfer to ST.Paul's for the nursing classes to complete my associates then to a four year college( most likely York because they have a bridge program if you have your associates) to complete the BSN. I have a liberal arts college degree so I have credits transferring towards the program. I want to get good grades ( As and Bs). Science is my strong suit but the formulas and math are tough for me.

So the classes I need to take are listed as followed:

Nutrition

a &p 1

a&p 2

microbiology

statistics

intro to chemistry

organic chemistry

So My questions are as follows:

Is it wise to take chemistry in a short session (7 week) ?

Should I take statistics and a & p 1 together ?

Should I take microbiology in a short session( 5 week) ?

Whats are some study tips when taking statistics, into to chemistry & A&P 1?

DO NOT take micro in 5 weeks. Thats the best advice I can give you. I took micro in a 6 week course over the summer and it was pure torture. Dont do it..

It's hard for a bunch of strangers to give you this kind of advice. Only you know your capacity. I would not take more than one class in a short session, ever.

Hi there, thanks so much for the advice. I was wondering if it's safe to take chemistry and micro together in a twelve week session ?

Very true indeed. It's just that I figured I'll be better able to make a decision based upon researching those who have been through the process.

You didn't mention how many classes you wanted to take at once, or what your time-frame is.

I think you'll find A&P and Micro easier after Chemistry. So I'd do this:

Chem I

Statistics

A&P I

Nutrition

A&P II

Micro

O Chem

Is it wise to take chemistry in a short session (7 week) ? I did it in 4 weeks, but it was hard. A LOT of info and I got a B. If I had had a full session, I feel like I'd have achieved an A.

Should I take statistics and a & p 1 together ? I did. I didn't do well in stats, but it was an issue with the way the info was presented, not the info itself. I took two other classes at the same time and made A's in everything else.

Should I take microbiology in a short session( 5 week) ? Nope.

Whats are some study tips when taking statistics, into to chemistry & A&P 1? Take good notes, go to any/all tutoring offered.

I found that A&P I and Nutrition complemented each other well in that they covered a lot of the same material. The same went for Micro and A&P II. I wouldn't take more than two sciences at one time. I found O Chem easier and much more interesting than Gen Chem (inorganic).

This^^^ definitely your best option OP if you think you can taking more that one science at a time.

First off thank you. this breaks it down really well for me.

I'm going to Queensborough Community College and ideally I would have liked to finish these courses in a year and a half- 2 years. At that QCC a& p 1,2 must be taken before you can take microbiology. that's why i was asking if i could take certain courses in the short session. I would like to finish by the end of Spring 2019.

They have a 7 week summer session.

so i would be starting in the spring of 2018.

Spring 2018

summer 2018

Fall 2018

Spring2019

Summer 2019

My question is of the courses i mentioned can i take any in the seven week and still do really well or is it best to just take full on sessions.

I was thinking of doing the following:

Spring 2018:

chem

statistics

summer (7 week) 2018:

a and p 1

fall 2018:

a and p 2

nutrition

spring 2019:

micro

summer 2019:

organic chem

Personally, I wouldnt take any science classes over the summer. I took statistics over the summer in a 6 week course and it was really easy, so I recommend doing that. If I were in your position, I would take

Spring 2018- Chem, A&P1, Nutrition (or you can take nutrition during summer 2018)

Summer 2018- Statistics

Fall 2018- A&P2, Organic chem

Spring 2019- Micro

I do have a couple questions for you. Are you sure that you have to take 2 chem classes? Most colleges only require 1. And is a 7 week semester the longest that your college offers during the summer? Im asking because some schools offer a 10 week semester during the summer and I feel like you could easily knock out 2 classes in that time frame.

I'm taking the organic chemistry because the private school i want to transfer to requires it and i'm trying to lower my costs by getting it out of the way at QCC.

Unfortunately they only offer a 7 week program. CUNY allows you to go to other cuny schools for their summer sessions. And i did find a school i can take the classes at. So with that being said what would you suggest i take in the 10 week summer session.

In a 10 week session, I would recommend taking a science class along with statistics. That way you would be done with all of your classes by the end of Fall 2018.

But honestly, I dont know if Im the right person to give you advice. For me, time is money, and I made it my goal to finish school as fast as I could. I was REALLY aggressive in the way I scheduled my classes for school. Last year during the summer, I took 4 classes. I took statistics and pathophysiology in a 6 week semester for the 1st summer session, and then I took microbiology and a 2 credit nursing class in a 6 week semester for the 2nd summer session. It was HARD, but at the end of the day, it was all worth it. I will be graduating with an adn at age 20.

If youre motivated and dedicated to spending a lot of time studying, then I recommend following the schedule that I recommended.
