You've passed your NCLEX. You've maintained your nursing license over the last couple of years. You've invested in the latest nursing literature. You've networked and socialized with other nurses. You've worked in a variety of different areas of nursing i.e. home health, ICU, Med/Surg,Labor and Delivery, etc. Your heart says " I love being a registered nurse, I can't see myself having another career. Definitely this is for me." However, you are not able to convince others of this and are approached and steered daily to do something else with your life because in their eyes you have no clue what you are doing and are an eyesore to the profession. What would it take for you to give up on your nursing career? Would you feel ashamed for being an adult who doesn't easily believe that what others want for you is best? Would you feel as if you've wasted your time? What professional career could/would you explore that wouldn't leave you with unequal pay or unequal autonomy?
If someone offered me a garden nursery for cheap, I would quit nursing in a heartbeat and spend my days with plants and dirt. I imagine that would last about 6 months, and then I would really miss nursing, because I do love my career, but I also really like plants.
If I could have the same salary and time off as I do now, I would take a job working with animals, or some kind of social work working with foster children.
I think I could only stop nursing if something I did actually caused the death of a pt. Which I just can't imagine. If for some reason I ever stopped for any other reason I would go back to designing kitchens!
Unfortunately I do know several people who are in this situation and have determined that nursing is not for them. If it were me , I would teach ....science:yeah:
