What did the physical for our nursing program require?

Published

I was just wondering what your physical consisted of. As ironic as this may be, I am deathly affriad of going to the doctors. Even more so for getting pap smears.

Would nursing schools ever make you get a pap smear to enter?

For mine it was a regular physical. Plus they did a hearing/vision (which aren't normally don't at my physical). Then I requested titers for the vaccines that my doctors office lost so I could show that I was immune to the diseases. Then later I have to get my PPD (the 2nd one because I already got the 1st one, they are usually 2 step PPDs). No, pap smears are not required to get into nursing school.

Mine was a regular physical. My family doctor doesn't do pap smears and I was not required to go to a gynecologist. I have never heard of a nursing school requiring gynecological exams. But as an aside, you should really work on your fear in that regard. I'm sure there is some reason for it and hopefully you can overcome it. Anyway, my physical consisted of: Height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, respirations all done by an MA. Doctor came in and looked in my ears and throat, listen to my heart, felt my abdomen, checked my reflexes. Just all the normal things. His MA gave me my PPD. My doctor filled out my forms about my suitability for the nursing program and immunizations. I came back a couple days later to get my TB test read. Pretty simple.

Thanks for the input. Believe me I don't think I'll ever get a pap smear done. I'm embarrassed just going to the beach in a swimsuit. LOL Me and my self consciousness

I really hope you can get over this because getting a pap smear can save your life if you get cervical cancer. I understand where you are coming from because I am very self concious about my labia (it's large and one guy I dated in high school told everyone I had "roast beef" so I'm a little scarred ). I seek out female gynos and make sure I am comfortable with them first.

Really? My program had no physical.

I used to be shy of down there until I had my 1st child. At 36 weeks you go weekly until you deliver, then you have every doctor staring down there while the baby is born (that got me over my fear really quickly). I have 5 kids now. You have to remember this, gyn's see all shapes, sizes, colors, ages, hairy, non hairy lady partss. Trust me, they have seen everything there is to see, STDs, yeast infections, etc.. There is no perfect "pretty" lady parts. So don't be so shy, those exams are fast and can save your life :) Good luck, and don't be so shy.

Perhaps if you find a female practitioner you would be able to feel more at ease? I have always gone to nurse-midwives for my PAP smears and they are awesome about walking me through what they are doing, discussing my concerns, even giving me a mirror so I can watch what they are doing if I want. I used to be nervous too but then I had a really positive experience with the midwives. You could also invite your significant other or a close friend to come with you
