"They are going to have to take the baby"
I don't know why but that statement makes my jaw clench up everytime I hear it.
I had a patient the other day ask me how I was going to insert a foley since "the head is down there, wont that hurt the baby?" For the love god, people .... come on .. 2 HOLES! SERIOUSLY!
and my favorite of all time ...
"Does that machine beep everytime I dilate?" .. this one left me speechless
Please share your "omg, no she didn't say/ask that" quotes
boy sheeshh, let me rephrase before you jump all over meIF I WAS A PT and someone wanted to come in my room to pray..... ( i was trying to get the point across that assuming someone is christian is a bad idea) but thanks for trying to teach when it wasnt needed and even if you know someones religion, they still may not want to pray with you uhhh why do people jump on other people on this board all the time
Noone "jumped on you". RNwiter gave a thoughtful response and some good suggestions. But it is offensive that you said you puke if someone asked you to pray. RN writer suggestions for response were great, and would not offend the asker.

No jumping intended. It was not at all clear that you were thinking from the patient's perspective.
My suggestions may not have benefitted you, but perhaps someone else will feel a little more prepared to deal with this delicate area if it should ever come up. Handled carefully, no one need feel disrespected or uncomfortable.
just as a side note and im totally not attacking anyone, i get irked when people assume if you are white in this country you are christian if you are a pt, not to mention crosses in pt rooms and references to god when recieving care from staff.... not everyone is christian in this country and some people take great offense to such comment
Would you take great offense if someone offered you a food you didn't like or even one you were allergic to? Would you assume they meant you disrespect and become angry? Or would you simply say, "No thank you.," or explain that it didn't agree with you.
There are occasional zealots of every persuasion (including atheist and anti-theist). But the usual person does not mean any harm when they bring up prayer or simply mention spiritual things. They are sharing something they value. Would it be possible to simply say, "Thanks, but I have different beliefs," just as you would decline a dish you chose not to eat?
As for crosses in hospitals, many are religious institutions. Such hospitals would not have survived without the backing and considerable financial contibutions of the religious groups that founded them.
I work in a Catholic hospital. If anyone finds a cross in their room to be objectionable, we will remove it without question. We have many Orthodox Jewish patients, Hmong patients, African tribal patients and we respect their desires.
I'm sure it gets tiresome dealing with other people's assumptions, but in taking offense when none is meant, it's possible to give offense.
This is for clarification only. No jumping intended.
Sorry if this one has already been covered-I didn't read all the posts in this thread. But.....What bugs me the most is when a patient is talking on their cell phone and they refuse to get off so you can do their admission, check them, reposition them, whatever!!! Classic example-I walked into the patients room, she was talking to her friend on her cell phone-the same friend that had left the room 15 min earlier. I had already told the patient when I would be back to check her, I walk in the room, get the sterile glove on, lube up and wait for her to get off the phone. She continues talking about nothing and doesn't show any signs of stopping. After 10 min, I took the glove off and told her to call me when she was off the phone!!!!
Even better is when you rush into a room cause baby's in the middle of a decel, when you tell mom you need her to turn over and she asks if it can wait a minute cause she's on the phone!

You couldn't just thank them for their kindness, even though you don't believe? Besides, not all faiths that pray are white/Christian/prodestant.
Our faith is a part of us. It is not easy to separate it from what we say and do. Offerring to pray, etc. is many people's way of showing compassion. A simple 'no thank you' will do.
OK, I'm a youngin' also and I hate it when pt's (usually elderly) ask me how old I am, but in a demeaning tone of voice, as if I'm unqualified to take care of them. I don't look like I'm 12! I've been a nurse for almost 3 years...I do well! I don't know what else they could mean by that!! Do they go around asking every 50-year old how old they are?? No!
maybe they are just curious to know that younger nurses are not only efficient but also knowledgeable......anyway the age of the nurses does not correlate to better experience nor knowledge.....when I was in the clinical area I always face the same issue but I think must be my positive attitude and smile attribute to being a younger looking nurse....isnt that good to be young ....alot of feedback i gather previously when working as a nurse manager in the orthopeadic unit revealed that the patient really appreciate the younger nurses who are really beaming with smiles and lots of positive energy that help to motivate and encourage them to get well better ....and also make them want to be hospitalised longer toooooooo
