"They are going to have to take the baby"
I don't know why but that statement makes my jaw clench up everytime I hear it.
I had a patient the other day ask me how I was going to insert a foley since "the head is down there, wont that hurt the baby?" For the love god, people .... come on .. 2 HOLES! SERIOUSLY!
and my favorite of all time ...
"Does that machine beep everytime I dilate?" .. this one left me speechless
Please share your "omg, no she didn't say/ask that" quotes
(Or how about the people with tons of tattoos and piercing that are afraid of IVs? I never have understood that at all lol.)
I had to draw blood on an I.V. heroine drug user that freaked out on me when I pulled out a 20 gage needle. The patient asked if I could use a heroine needle to draw the blood (they use diabetic needles)
OK, here's one from a pt...when I had my 1st child, a resident came in and asked if a Dr had recently checked my cervix. The wonderful nurse who was assigned to my care, and was standing right next to me, just had 2 mins ago, and I told the res. so. she turned around, all witchy, and said "well now, that's not the same thing as a Dr is it!?" I was dumbfounded, she insulted both of us in one fell swoop, I still regret not telling somebody about her...talk about no bedside manner!Sheesh!
I'm not an OB nurse by any stretch of the imagination, but I have been reading this thread for about 5 hours. I did work some outpost nursing and "caught" a few babies. Scary stuff!!! Cheers to you all for being there!!
I had one dad ask when his wife could go home so that she could take care of the other kids too. I was like, ah, your wife has just been preggers for 9 months, taking care of you and 7 kids and you want her to go home today??? I don't think so!
I spoke to the DR, and we kept her for 3 days PP. Told the dad that she was high risk for a bleed and that she would be staying a bit longer than most. Seeing as she was the only new mom there, and we only had our 8 LTC pts in house, we let her get some rest. Woke her up when the baby was hungry, and she had the baby with her when she was awake. Otherwise, we babysat while she got some much needed sleep. She was just wiped out! Poor thing.
Sometimes I just don't get it. Men can be "a bit" clueless.
It irks me when a patient's family asks me to page the physician at 11:30 pm so they can find out the results of a test the patient had earlier in the day. I understand they want to know what has been found--but no way is the physician going to happy to get a call to talk with family members who were not available to speak with earlier in the day. I explain that the physician will be in at 0700--just 7.5 more hours! Most people will be understanding but there are always a few who get angry, demanding and loud. On a few occasions we have actually paged the doc to speak with the irrate family member who cannot be calmed. Guess who gets to deal with the crabby doc the next day?
I personally love it when you do the whole breastfeeding thing with them the first time and emphasize repeatedly that both she and the baby have to learn how to do this, and they still say, "I don't think s/he wants the breast. S/he must want a bottle instead."
I also really like, "Why is s/he crying?" It's like, wow, what a time you're going to have. Even better is when they add, "can't you give him/her a pacifier?"
I do love the race for the area's first New Year's Baby. On Dec 31st, a couple who was in very, very early labor came to the hospital and asked for a C-section to be done at 12:01 so they could "get the money, you know that they give you for having the first baby."
Where these nutso ideas come from, I'll never guess.....
Part of our role is to educate our patients without judging what we feel they should or should not know. Everyone had to learn what they know at some point, some just learn certain things later than others.
No offense please but that is spoken like a true nursing student. Wait until you have some experience under your belt to see how you feel.

I once had a mom look down at her very sick 24 week preemie, about 500 grams, intubated on a high frequency vent, on pavulon, with multiple IV lines and drips...and asked me, "So he been suckin' a bottle okay?"
