What do patients say that irks you?

Published

"They are going to have to take the baby"

I don't know why but that statement makes my jaw clench up everytime I hear it.

I had a patient the other day ask me how I was going to insert a foley since "the head is down there, wont that hurt the baby?" For the love god, people .... come on .. 2 HOLES! SERIOUSLY! :uhoh3:

and my favorite of all time ...

"Does that machine beep everytime I dilate?" .. this one left me speechless

Please share your "omg, no she didn't say/ask that" quotes

"Are you gonna start the Potassium now?"

It's pitocin! No, you don't want a potassium drip right now... :)

Almost forgot this one.

A pt that was having a first-time C-section, had a prior lady partsl delivery, said she'd had a "pizza". Episiotomy? "Yeah, yeah, that's it!"

I love it when you go into a patient's room to start an IV or some other procedure, and the patient's family asks, "do you know what you are doing?" I am so tempted to say, "well sort of, you see they were short staffed tonight, so they just yanked me off of the street corner - hey I clean-up pretty nicely don't I? I love the scrubs!". Or, my personal fave "No, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night!". Geeezzz :rotfl:

Hey, I thought I was the only one that used that Holiday Inn thing..." Are you the nurse " as you're getting ready for a sve....:-)

I work in L&D only most of the time with post partum patients staying over when post partum is full, I really don't like post partum and to top it off the patient and family members are alway's asking when am I going to my room?(would you rather be in a semi private room or in your labor room that I just cleaned up so nicely for you?) When will I see the baby?(for the 100th time I told you four hrs after delivery) When am I going home?(Please lady can you listen 24hrs normal delivery 48 hrs if c/s) :lol_hitti !

In my hospital (and in most of swedish hospitals) lady partsl deliveries can go home after 6 hours (and a lot of them do!).

What do you mean with them not seeing their baby until 4 hours later (after c-section?)?

I think most European countries treat L&D more like what it is, a natural process, not an illness. Mom's go home earlier because, if they check out fine, they don't see any reason to stay behind. Having spent some time in Europe I found that they treat birth, and illness, very differently most of the time... I don't know the stats but I think most uncomplicated deliveries in Europe are attended by a midwife as well. Maybe Sweden can offer her opinion on the matter?

In Russia ...the mom is kept with the baby in hospital for 1 week ..no less. The father is also not allowed in the delivery room. Ever.

WTF?! Why were they even ALLOWED in your snack kitchen? Why does even ONE person need a meal voucher----haven't they known for 9 months this day was coming? Couldn't they set aside enough to buy a meal in the cafeteria? Didn't they pass numerous fast food places on the way in?

What the heck is going on in hospitals these days, that visitors expect to be fed, for FREE? I hear about ER nurses having to pass out sandwiches and snacks in ERs, and all I can think is, "If this patient is so sick that he needed to come to the emergency room, shouldn't he be required to remain NPO--in case he needs labwork that would be more accurate if he was fasting, OR, God forbid, he needs to go to surgery? And why can't his visitors purchase their OWN food and drinks?"

And a visitor handing a nurse clothes--dirty, at that--and demanding SHE get them cleaned for him? That is disgusting. I would have hurled them directly into a red bag, and called security to escort him out, and let administration yell at me all they wanted to. THEY can wash his nasty clothes.

I am a firm believer in the philosophy that people will only take advantage of us if we allow them to do so.

Maybe we need to go back to the '60s, where the expectant father (and visitors) waited in the waiting room, and went to the cafeteria or purchased food or coffee from the vending machines when they were hungry or thirsty.

I agree. Where, indeed, DO people get the nerve? How in heaven's name were these people raised, with their preconceived notions of entitlement?

Gosh, I can remember my (then) 4 year old (she's 27 now, LOL!) being hospitalized after an emergency exploratory lap for a liver laceration after an MVA. I WORKED in that hospital----but I would never have asked for so much as a popsicle or juice for my other toddler while visiting, let alone meals for myself; nor did I witness anyone else attempting to do so while visiting THEIR children. My goodness--my husband and I went to the cafeteria, and purchased our meals----why do people think that the hospital owes them ANYTHING? What has caused this paradigm shift?

I had one disturbing family member that finally just killed me! He told one of my coworkers his wife need 10 units of insulin not 6. She then explained the purpose of a sliding scale for coverage and he said that was a way for these doctors to CYAs!!! :uhoh3: I have lots more just on this one guy but that was when I'm like this guy needs to get out of here he has no clue and acts likes he's an expert when he is TOTALLY ignorant about the health field!

And the same family preceded to hound me as soon as they knew the pt's blood sugar was taken another time. And I usually don't pull this out but i told them "after I see my other pt's I will cover her sugar" i do it rarely but people back off and understand it's not private care here people! Well think again i thought the 2 family members eyes were going to fall out of their head. They were pist.

One patients father saying to me "how long have you been doing this?"....as if to say "are you competent?"...I know I look 16 but I am 23 and went to university for 3 years, and have a BSc in Nursing!! To which then followed "didn't you want to do medicine?" AAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGGG.....ok well why not ask me "didn't you want to be an astronaut"..."didn't you want to be a truck driver"..."didn't you want to be a hairdresser?"...NOOOOO I wanted to be an RN so here I am!!!!!

I'm 24 and get that too. And one time one manipulative pt is like how long have you been a nurse? I tell him 2 years and he's like i can tell you still have that intense look about yourself! What does that mean! And I did at the begining get why don't you have a wedding ring on your finger?! Nothing killed me like when i had a pt when i was in charge. I faught one pt comming then got an asthma new. Well I knew the pt in my band. I wouldn't even say friends but i knew here and thought of maybe just doing admission work and passing the pt then thought everyone has too many. i talked to her and she seemed comfortable. Well I coudn't get her iv! She knows i'm young and she made a comment well next time try oh no you're going to get it! As if i was doing something wrong from inexperience! Well couldn't get it. REally pettite lady. WEll the she refused it and wanted to leave ama! I was mortified! I will NEVER take a pt i know again! She stayed but it was very uncomfortable and then i'm like did i cause her to get to this point! She's very anxious even where i know her so i don't think it was me. It would have happened but what i thought an easy admission boy was a wrong! And knowing her made it worse.
