What part of Brisbane to live in

Hi!

any help would be great!! I don't know were to start, my husband and I are looking into moving to OZ on a 136visa. We *think* we want to go to Brisbane. We need to be near a childrens hospital for me and would like to be close to the sea.

can anyone help or point us in the way of a site that can?

Thanks in advance!

the two big children's hospitals in brisbane are at Herston(royal brisbane) or at sth brisbane (Mater kids). there are several good neighbourhoods to live in sround both hospitals.

royal childrens is a 10 min walk to the valley, or a quick 5 min bus to the city. the suburbs around there are kelvin grove, fortitude valley, wilston, red hill, paddington, newmarket. all these are quite nice areas.

the mater childrens is close to southbank, west end, highgate hill, kangaroo point. again, all good areas to live in.

guess it depends on how much you want to spend on rent and how far you want to be from work. there's good public transport to both hospitals. an idea is to go to www.realestate.com.au and search the above surburbs for an idea on price fpr location and will give you a map.

also... unlike sydney... the sea around brisbane isn't that flash. it's not nice beaches like you may imagine. sure... there's surburbs by the sea, but it's on a bay and not too nice to swim in. the nearest surf beaches are about a 45min-1hr drive from brisbane. hope this helps

Thanks for the info. Hubby wants 'perfect' beaches so I think we will have to choose another area. Its so hard though!

Aawww, c'mon ............ Southbank's man made beach is not bad:lol2: . Redcliffe is not too far off. Nudgee beach apparently is pretty good too and that's not taking into consideration more areas on the south side:idea: ;)

A place is only as good as you make it to be:welcome:

Okay the best beaches are about an hour away but we are talking Surfers Paradise here!! A little further and you have nearly untouched beaches. AND you have the whole of Morton Bay to play in - perfect!!:D

The Mater in Brisbane is also adept at assisting with Visa's as I know it has helped a few people out.

As Susie said there is good public transport to both hospitals and if you choose a suburb a little further away from the higher priced inner city you can get better accomodation at better rates.

All the bigger regional hospitals also have at least one paediatric ward and they would kill to get an overseas trained RN to work with them. However, if you are going to work in a Regional hospital remember that from about Bundaberg up there is no surf because the Great Barrier Reef protects the coast. Instead you get something more than perfect in places like the Whitsundays.

(Hot Darn do I need another holiday says she as she dreams of going back to the Whitsunday Islands)

Thanks guys,

Beach wise we don't surf, but hubby dreams of it

I am a paeds nurse so like I said I need to be near a childrens hospital. No adults for me  :lol2: its just so hard finding an area, with reguards to what the area is like, what are the schools like etc, is it a good area to live in. What is Nossa Heads like? anyone know?

thanks

Hi again

Susieok thanks for the info on areas.

r.e beaches we are looking for clean beaches were we can swim etc. English beaches have a different beauty, IYSWIM. So its hard to be subjective on what we class as a 'good' beach and what others think.

Noosa Heads is fantastic but it is a long drive to Brisbane and I doubt you would get a position at the hospital there as it is a prime area to live it rarely has trouble with recruitment. Might be different at the moment but a lot of people living on the sunshine coast work at Noosa

The hospital at Noosa is a private hospital and would be mostly adults the place to enquire is actually Nambour Hospital if you are thinking of Noosa

Thanks Gwenith, not Noosa Heads then. I've been looking at Google earth, its fab!! Im just trying to work out how far the beach is from kelvin grove, fortitude valley, wilston, red hill, paddington, newmarket area/s. Think I have decided on Brisbane otherwise I will keep chopping and changing my mind!

Don't forget that although the surf is at surfers paradise what is lying off Brisbane is Morton Bay. Google Morton Island if you want somewhere to swim - imagine a tropical island within about an hour or so by Ferry - there is even a wild Dolphin pod that comes into the the resort there.
