My company makes me pay them 70% of base hourly rate.
The missed shift is allowed to be made up within the same pay period but the most egregious is including when you're sick.
It made me feel sicker!
Please share your experiences so we may all rise up to change things and be treated with dignity, after all, what good are these companies without nurses who wish not to travel if they learn that company coffers first and last priority, even when you're sick.
Thank you.

It's not personal...it's business.
The company charges the missed shift adjustments to make up their costs for housing because you're short your commitment.
My current company does not charge me if I call off

meandragonbrett is correct, travel is a business. It is all based on an all inclusive bill rate for worked hours. The agency has to meet all costs including housing and per diems out of that bill rate. If you are not working, there is no money coming in to meet those expenses. Contract work is completely different from benefited staff. If you need staff benefits and lower risks, you need to work staff. There is no way that the intense competitive environment of contingent staffing will allow adding another 30 percent or so to provide benefits such as PTO. Chargebacks are certainly one of the things you should explore and consider before signing a contract as some agencies will allow you to miss a certain amount of work without penalty. Such policies (which need to be specified in your contract) are good business as they help avoid the bad feelings you are experiencing and help retain valuable travelers. But no agency will pay you for hours you don't work for personal reasons.
One reason you may be working as a traveler is better money. Put some of the extra money aside as a self insurance policy. If you generally have good health, you will come out ahead in the long term. If not, well, you really need to be in a benefited position.
You do bring up a good point in that this system does have problems. It pushes contract workers to work sick, which can have a very negative impact on the vulnerable population we are trying to help.

I get 2 sick days per contract. I do not get paid for these sick days, but the missed shift allowance is not taken out of my paycheck. This is with cross country.
When I was with AMN they would take $200-300 something out of my paycheck if I called in sick one day.
It was with AMN.
They are even threatening to contact past and present employers I had been that I was ill and that I have to present a medical certificate clearing me and without physical limitations.
You cannot recoup missed shifts within the pay period because departments has set schedules, you cannot make up for it even if you want to.
Well, fellow Travelers disregard this company or any other company that are all about corporate greed, without nurses who wants to come on board with them they have no business. They should be told that it is inhumane, we are not machines, we are humans who get sick.
At least have certain sick calls be included on the contract.
