What makes you smile?

What is that one thing that is unique to you...that just fills you with joy?

After a very hard and exhausting first 8 weeks of the semester I finally had a moment to soak in one of my little joys.

What was it???

The beautiful trill of my Purple Martins returning to their home for the spring!

Every year about this time my birds return and fill me with wonderfull memories of my family and glorious spring days. As a young girl I worked hard with my grandfather to grow and hollow out gourds to make little bird homes. My grandfather and I would sit on the porch in the evenings at his farm and watch the martins swoop over our heads and make beautiful songs. My grandfather died a few years ago. My mother found his book on "Purple Martins" and gave it to me. It's something small, but means so much.

We decided to put up our own martin house a few years ago and are delighted yearly by their return. We make it a point to sit on our porch with our daughter and enjoy the time together. There is just something about a warm summer evening in Texas and the sight and sounds of my cheery birds.

My little babies of course. Today it was my two year old son who came trottin' through the room with a huge sense of purpose...like he had somewhere important he was headed. The part that made me giggle is that he had on his snowboots (with his little pj shorts) and his sisters pink princess hat.

music, reading my books, writing and what will really fill me with joy is an apceptance interview from PBISN in NYC, why? It will mean i am on my way to having a solid career, on my way to having the means to take care of myself and my mom the way i want too, on my way to have more options in my life, it will mean the greatness that I dream about.

Sawing a cats head in half in my A&P lab on Thursday? It was pretty intense and I think I was smiling the whole time...

I am alot like you, the little things in life sometimes provide the greatest pleasures! I also love nature. My favorite birds are cardinals. We have a park near by and I hike there often. The other day I went and I saw butterflies, yellow finches, cardinals, and the air was filled with sweet scent. The white yucca blooms are about to open. I can't wait for the bluebonnets!

Someone has a martin bird house at the school crossing at the elementary school and we love to watch those busy birds while waiting for the light to change. Thanks for sharing the beautiful picture.

After a long day of work and school - the one thing that always brings a smile to my face is the thought of a nice weekend with my wife and daughter. My daughter is a year and 1/2, and last weekend we went to fly kites, and played with sidewalk chalk - and had so much fun. No matter how stressful my week is, I know my family is waiting for me at home. *smile*

Definitely my son. :heartbeat He's just a little over one, but whenever I get bogged down in the stress of college and lose my smile, he always has a way of putting it back on my face. My second answer would be reading a good book. :)

My twins running to me when I come home from work or school screaming, "Mommy!" with arms open wide and waiting for a hug. It doesn't matter what happened during the day....I'm never too tired or too sick to see them :)
