What you make as a nurse Vs. Cost of living

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Where I live RN's make between $23-34/hr, depending on expereince title ect. Here you can not buy a modest home (and even fixer-uppers)for under $300,000.....every one talks about how well nursing pays, but with the cost of here is terrible. What do you make an hour and what does an "average" home go for in your area.

I work PRN in Texas and make 32.00/hr. We have a nice 2500 sq. foot home with hardwood floor, gated community, etc. currently priced at around 200K. I would never in a million years pay the kind of $$$ California people pay for those shacks. I was shocked when I visited a friend near Marin County and she pointed, literally, to a shack (it was LEANING to one side) that had two bedrooms and two baths. She said it would sell easily for at least 500-600K.

I'm an RN with 7 years in nursing, acute, longterm care and now PCU telemetry. I live in the Florida Pan Handle, a place called Niceville. The average House sells for 300,000. most cost much more. The pay for RNs

starts at 16.00 and goes to 24.00 an hr. with marginal shift diffs. The waitresses at local beach joints average 30.00 and better per hr. Whats wrong with this picture???

Damn.. lets all move to texas

most of these salaries are what concern me. i am a pre-nursing student (hoping to start pre-reqs in the fall) and a single parent. i've done the corporate/office job thing for about 14 years and am burned out...but i make almost $40/hour. i have a nice home that is currently valued @ $400k (i bought for $200k some years ago...gotta love that appreciation!). i really want to pursue nursing, but i must admit i am afraid there will be a big adjustment first to my going back to school and even after graduating, still making less for quite a while. has anyone else experienced this and was it still "worth it"? i think/hope it will be...

CNA training wage at my facility = 9.24 / hr.

Cost of living... median house cost about $500,000. A studio apartment rents for $850. One room in a house can rent for $600. It's awful.

Nurses in the midwest make about $18 per hour right out of school and in the mid $20 range ($24-$26) with a few years' experience. In a decent neighborhood, you can expect to pay no less than $250,000 for a house. (the city I live in has WIDE ranges of real estate costs depending on the area as low as $75,000 in outlying areas to $500-$600,000 in more desirable areas, but I think $250K is about average).

I just graduated from the University of MIami. The average starting salary is 21.50. The average home costs 400 K, and that's on the low end. To rent, about 1000 for a nice one bedroom. I am moving back to Los Angeles, where I will make 32.50 an hour. THe houses are around 500 K on the low end, but to rent a one bedrom, it may cost me about 1200 for a sweet place. How can I afford to live in Miami on 21.50? its a joke. Los Angeles really isn't that much more expensive, I mean maybe a tad, but at least you can afford to live there. Everyone bitches about California but you have to see that there is a balance. it costs more, so you make more. Here in Miami, it costs a lot and you make nothing. My friend is moving to San Francisco and will make around 45 an hour STARTING AS A NEW GRAD. yeah, he'll be working nights, but who cares?I am so sick of people whining "but its so expensive to live in California" Shut the hell up. FIne . stay in Miami, make 21 an hour, and work 2 full time jobs so that you can afford your piece of crap house. No one says you even HAVE TO own a place. ITs a headache and a money pit. I'll go to CAli, make 5200 from ONE job, and live comfortably. Those of who ***** about CAlifornia, stay in your hole. More money and jobs for me. I had 3 job offers. IN THE UNIT I WANTED My friends in other states are fighting for work. I am tired of the "but its so expensive" debate. no, its not. go there, see for yourself, do some ressearch before you open your whiny mouth.God I hate Miami........

Must be the area you are living in. Family friend bought a brand new home in Florida for 250,000 two years ago. Really nice with a pool and a strange cage thing over it.

Two years ago, we bought our house for 297,000. We are listing it at 440,000. Ask them what their house is worth now. And that's fine. If an area is going to be expensive, the salaries should balance that out. That's all Im saying. In Miami, that is not the case. In CAli, its a little more liveable.
